Advice for installing LOD

I've been playing without LOD now and am enjoying the game. I want to play with LOD with the expanded stash, hireling enhancements, runes and others. I was wondering what the advice is for installing LOD over an existing standard installation with patch 1.10. Will my current game continue as normal with new enhancements or will I need to start over? Will anything in my current character be affected?

You can install LoD over your Classic (ie without expansion) D2, but some items may change due to new codes. Your character will not be affected, but your character build may not work as well in LoD.
