i completed his quest and made it to Aman'lu but I would like to know whether the gift that you retrieve from his brother is random or predetermined?

I think it's always a random rare weapon.

random, yes! after saving my game and fetching the item from the blacksmith, and trying this multiple times i found out that you don't always get a unique/rare item. one of the times i got was a non-magical fighter staff. also of note is that after 6 or 7 tries i recieved the same item that i got on the first attempt.

Have done some saving and reloading, and like some other rewarddispensing, I usually get some set item weapon (merc- ex Skewer of the olimarch, Night'shadow dagger, thenas shillelagh) or a unique weapon. The set items seem to show up in the first tries, but come up only once if you do not shut down the game completely.

This is my personal experience and the rewards does not seem completly random.
