??? guy - possible spoiler?

I have only seen the ??? guy once, after days of playing - I've done all but 2 of the secondary quests and all but last 2 parts of main quest. he appeared when I opened the chest in the last one of Amren's areas, and I was sure I killed him, as he vanished and a whole pile of good gear appeared, but no stone tablet, either in my inventory or in the lore items list - any suggestions?
