The NPC's in the game have made it very clear to choose a class and stick to it. But do i lose stats if say i take my combat mage and have him concentrate on nature magic for a bit or what penalty is there for doing stuff like that?

The reason i ask is because there are some nice skills i wouldnt mind having that require me to get skills up in other areas but i dont want to risk losing any valuable stats.

Multi-classing in DS is horrid, expecialy half-way through.
You should pick a path, and just vigiliantly stick to it.
Although a few levels in a side class wont hurt much, like 5 or 6.

need your opinion

would it hurt if i leveled to 99 then work on nature magic or something so i can buy nature magic abilitys or would that still cause a penalty?

That depends on whether you plan on playing past the mercenary level because you won't reach level 99 in mercenary.

if you still wish to multiclass than you could play your character in one class all the way through the mercenary level than switch off to another class when y ou go onto the next level (i forgot what the next one was, veteran?).

I might take Finala and switch her to natural magic this time around (starting Veteran level) and just spend the time to get her to be able to do both.

I might take my character which is a fighter and waste a whole playing on making him a ranged player as well. Then again that's about 3 weeks of my life I'd be wasting. :D
