Multi Player what who and where

Hi.
I have now played DS for quite some time, and hurried myself down to the store and got DSII. At the moment I am halfway through the second game, and running so I can finish it all.
How about the multi player part.? I have been out a few times and trying to get some games, but the lvl diff has always been to great, I am lvl 53 BM atm, and it seems everyone else is lower than me.
How do I get it started with a decent group, and what are the primary goals in MP.? Where are the best places to hunt, and after what.?
I have started not to only use the set armor, but are going after the specific stats in game instead, but I guess much more are to be found on the MP part.
Hope you can help me out, since I am eager to play with others and whack som computer made pixel butt.
