Is "chance to find" an individual or cumulative stat?

Is it better to give one character the highest possible "chance to find" stat, even at the expense of other equipment, and then use that character to open all containers...
- or -
is "chance to find" a cumulative stat based on your entire party?

According the GPG forums, MF is based on the highest individual MF on any character.
Whenever someone in the party opens a chest or kills a monster, the game finds the character with the highest magic find / gold find percentage and applies that bonus to the drop.
Therefore it is most advantageous to have a single character with very high bonuses.

From reading various forums for awhile, I've seen a lot of people claiming it's cummulative, but I tend to believe what the dev team says--Unless someone has prove through experimentation that says otherwise.

It's so magic, it's unbelievable!
Honestly, I find the way the devs describe it very strange. On every kill they search through all party members' inventories before they drop an item? Why such an extra effort? If the game is full of these extra look-ups they could have made it simpler and thereby improved the game's performance. Most people just expect the killing character's chance to be used. According to the thread (thanks for the link, gid) it even works like this - the highest count on the party, not the sum of all party members nor just the sum of all chances from one member - when the character finding the item is unconscious or even far away (maybe having a grayed out icon)!
Anyway, it is good to know how it is actually being applied. I'll test it now myself and see if my +220% per character(!) can be packed into one and if that changes anything ...
I had expected that it is taken only per non-pet-character and from the owner in case of a pet doing the kill (or opening the box).

My nature mage has 600% magic find, and I find decent loot left and right pretty consistently. I'll try selecting the resurrect spell so she doesn't attack, and only auto-heal as needed and see what happens. Or I could try spreading the rings out over multiple characters and see what happens then.

It's listed on individual pieces of equipment. To find the total, you'll have to add it up yourself (which is why there's some confusion about what the game is using).
