I have played Diablo 2 and the expansion several times and I love it but I havent played the first one yet. Do you think I should buy it. Will it help me understand even more things in D2?

Diablo 1 is pretty inexpensive so it shouldn't hurt the budget, it's extremely dated now but I think it's still a good game. Occasionally I'll install it and play despite having Diablo 2, it's interesting to see the changes and how powerful it's possible to get in the game.

Funny enough, the battlechest contains Diablo 1 in it.

When Diablo first came out, I played it to death - loved every minute of it.

Naturally, D2 and expansions followed - in fact, I've only just (finally!) stopped playing them. Recently, I thought I'd load up Diablo again for nostalgia's sake - I could not persevere long enough to get back into it.

As stated, it IS rather dated - and it shows. It certainly helps to understand the story - if you can stick it through.

Oh, and don't try and kill the Butcher (level 2 or 3) until you've done up to level 5 (unless you've got Flame Wall).

Alternatively, it is easier to simply buy a bow, and go in a room that allows you to shoot out, then you can shoot him to death.

But just some things about the game:

1. There's no unlimited experience in a single player game. Once a monster is dead, it is dead. For this reason, don't waste all your money, because you can't get more.
2. You can't get all of the quests, all of the time. The game takes many different paths, and while one game you may do a certain quest, next one you start, you probably won't.
3. If you go warrior, rogue, or monk, levelling up mana can be usefull if you get the spell healing. This will save a lot of your money, as potions won't be used as much.
4. Due to limited money, I suggest everytime you go to town, you go with a full inventory, and sell all the junk. In this way, you can keep gaining money.

And that's about all, I'm sure you'll go well if you are good with D2, so good luck.

@epitaph: The reason I think that you were so turned of by the original Diablo, was because you were expecting it to be more like DII. I also played the sequel before I played Diablo, but when I played it, I loved it! It just depends on your personal opinion.

@Obi-Wan-Evan: If you have the patience to deal with an older version of the classic Diablo II, then it is well worth it!!

i dont like the d1 because
1) i cant get online
2) i cant run

so in otherwords, the things one doesnt like about it might be small, but it can also be the difference between love and hate.
