Why the silent treatment?

Here's what's bugging me: If they are working on KOTOR III (and I sincerely hope that they are) why the heck is LucasArts being so quiet about it? You'd think that if they were trying to maintain interest in the series, they would at least make mention of the fact that they're working on it. Any thoughts/conspiracy theories?

My theory is that when they announce it, it will be about 2 months before release.
That way, they will feel no release date pressure (as in KotOR II), and the announcement will be fresh in everyones mind.

Everybody will get so hyped up over a secret game being kept that long, and they'll go out and buy it.

I'm probably wrong though.

Why? That's pretty possible. On the other hand, maybe it is not decided if there will be KotOR III or the team to do it is not yet chosen. I wonder.

If they were working on it, they would be shouting it from the rooftops--or from their PR agency, in any case. ;) And at least a year before release, they would start taking out ads, scheduling magazine interviews, and releasing screenshots and all those stupid little tidbits of useless internal information that please about 15 pre-teens. Show me an RPG in the last several years that hasn't received this treatment.

If it isn't being pushed, I strongly suspect it's because it's either not being made, or more than a year off in release.

I agree with Fable on this one. If we don't hear/see anything substantial, it is because there isn't much to tell about, for the excat same reasons as Fable suggests.

I don't belive the "coverup" (ei. only telling once it is almost done) - it would make no sense from a buisness viewpoint.

It really pains me to say this, but I fear that Xandax and Fable are right.

I hope they are not, though.

i think they will make a third kotor game seeing as the other two were so popular, but i do agree that if they are not advertising it and making a big deal out of it then its probably, at the best, in its early stages of development and will not be finished for quite some time yet.

Well i regret bring this up but it is a possibility.

I'm sure you have all heard of the tvseries they are making and that they are thinking of basing it on the old republic. Maybe they are going to continue the story through the tv series and not make another game.

Leaving a huge market open with thousands of fans waiting for a new game? Unlikely. I have not heard of any TV series coming out at all, so I'm not even sure if it is more than a rumour, but either way, there have been games on TV series for a while now, and even movies on games. There have been games coming out before the movies even start, so it makes little sense for them to do so, especially if this could be a way of promoting the game or vice versa, promoting any show.

Either way, why would any company give up such a chance to make such a profit? I doubt the TV show and I doubt that they would restrain having a PR department flooding us all with information on the game.

i thought george lucas said that he wasn't going to be making any more films etc., and i assume that would mean no tv spinoffs too.

It's still a possibility that it might not happen.

But to reply to you guys Lucas is not involved with the tv series he just gave the green light to make it. They said they are thinking about basing on the old republic.

Simply Lucas has nothing to do with the up coming tv series.

i reckon ch85us2001 is just about right and, in my opinion, why wouldn't they make a KotOR 3? I & II were so sucessful that it would be stupid not to make another one, and they'd be letting down loads of fans. i say look out for the next E3

sorry to say this...

I didn't want to post but apparently Kotor III has been scrapped.
Lucasarts had a team working on it but they ended up laying them off in the great lay-off (31 people fired)
Here's the link:

http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board. ... adid=50765
It says it at the end.

Why is it that everyone working anything that's Star Wars is an idiot?
Not only are they selfish bastards but they are stupid and make the worst possible choices in terms of potential profit to be made!

it doesn't say its been scrapped, just the team has been layed off. they could have handed the contract to another developer rather than develop it themselves so they can focus on other things. i don't believe they will not make a 3rd as the series is too popular. unless someone actually says officially that there will not be a kotor3 we can live in hope

Ajdaha, your link was discussed some time ago, and was made even longer ago, in several threads, I believe. Almost two years old, actually - [August 13, 2004, 4:47 pm ET] ;)

The news thread was started more than a year later. Just thought I'd point it out. :)

Thanks, Hill-Shatar, for pointing that out. Ajdaha's post made me nervous, until i realized that i'd read it before too.

Still, the fact that the last quasi-official statement issued was to say that the team had been fired, couple with the fact that that statement was almost two years ago, makes me nervous as heck. I know i'm not alone in hoping for a KOTOR III. The fact that this KOTOR III forum is so well-populated is evidence enough of that. Lucasarts has to know that the moment they put out KOTOR III, about a gazillion salivating fans will descend on their local video game store to buy it. However, the zeitgeist will only last so long, before people give up hope. At this point, all I need is just the tiniest little blurb from LA to say that they are in fact working on KOTOR III. Even if it's only going to be ready for 2009, I'd be satisfied to know that there will, sometime in my lifetime, be a resolution to the storylines set up in KOTOR's 1 and 2.

Thank God.
Sorry for the error.
I'm happy now.

According to a source close to the development team, Obsidian may not have sealed the deal yet for KOTOR 3.
