Strat Q: how good are pets?

I'm adventuring with:
1 my char, a tank.
2 lothar, commmbat magic
3 taar, nature magic, mixed buff/attack
4 deru, both ranged and attack nature magic

I hate to disband anybody but I'm curious whether a Wolf pet might be better than taar or deru. How great are those wolves? How tough are pets, generally?

(Oh: taar and deru both summon animals for tough battles.)

Since they don't eat XP, I consider them Pretty Awesome.

That, and the Scorpion Queen is a better ranged fighter than an actual ranged fighter, because higher strength doesn't add to ranged damage, but a higher level adds to ranged damage for pets.

A Dire Wolf is really tough for a Melee character. Once you get them fully mature, you get an emanation that causes 60% of Physical Damage Reflected to Enemy for anybody within range of the Dire Wolf.

They are worth trying out.

i picked up a mythrilhorn on my elite game, and i love it...my characters are main character dual wield melee, deru as ranger w/ gremal gun, sartan as two hand wielder, taar as nat mage and finalla as combat mage. the mythril horn was a very nice edition, i fed him all fighter armor so he's definitely a tank, his emanation gives party 12% def, and he keeps other characters off of my mages. his special is very usefull, i have a combo i like to use, i start with the enrage spec, drawing all the enemies to my mythhorn, then use the nat mage ice area affect spec that freezes, and then the area effect lighting, the freezing makes up for the long delay on it, if any are still left, i use my melee and ranger skills also but the point is the mythrilhorn groups them all close to him so max effect of the spells. the myth is the only pet i've liked personally.
