Starting new party on Veteran?

I just finished playing through on mercenary. I'd like to go on to Veteran but I'd like to try a new class. Is that possible, or does the game force you to play through mercenary for each different party first? I hoped that once you unlocked Veteran, it was unlocked for your install, rather than just that one party.
Thanks.

It's only unlocked for the party that finished mercenary. Enemies start out level 40+ in veteran, so any other character would get slaughtered.

I was hoping that having finished merc with one party, I would be able to create a new party and have them auto-leveled to 40 when you start a Veteran campaign. Just like when you create a new party on Gamespy, how it auto-levels you to 3. It sucks for replayability and variety to have to use your same party to try out Veteran. I'd rather try a new class for variety and a different skill level at the same time, so as to get the maximum experience of the game with the minimum number of times playing it through. Doesn't that sound fair and make sense?

You should have been able to play through all the classes if you picked up some teammates along the way. Veteran allows you to get a 5th party member so if you have a class of player or pet you want to try out, now is the time to add them to the party.
Don't worry about replayability, you'll get all new weapons/armor/higher spells coming your way in Veteran.
And besides, you wouldn't want a different party. All your weapons/armors/skills would all be gone! You need that to continue in Veteran right off the bat.

I played my first time through on GameSpy, which has a hard 3 character limit. My primary character is a fighting nature mage... and I never used any NPCs other than fighters, so I wanted to start over with a combat mage and try some ranged weapons on my NPCs. Looks like I have to choose starting over or keeping my same fighting nature mage.

[/QUOTE] You do know it's a 4 character limit right on Mercenary, right? If you want a combat mage or ranger, just add a new NPC to the party. You have a maximum of 5 characters on Veteran difficulty.

I just said... GameSpy limits you to a maximum of three characters. "Party Mode" or whatever. One mode lets you have 1 character and 4 players. Another mode lets you have 2 characters and 3 players. Another mode lets you have 3 characters and 2 players. Unless GameSpy is lying, you cannot have 4 characters when playing on GameSpy!

My fault, you are doing multiplayer. You're right.
