Killing ??? for the mysterious stone

Anyone have an advice on how to kill the ??? creature? I have fought him numerous times, and many times thought he was dead because he had no color at all left on his life meter. But, he still managed to jump into the ground.

I looked in the Bestiary and it said 9 under the Kills heading. But, he's never left a corpse...only dove underground. So, have I killed him or not? I checked my Quest Items for the mysterious stone (item 96), but it's not in there.

So, anyone who has any advice or information, I'd appreciate it.

It's been a while since I've played but as far as I remember you have to have everything else in order to get the stone, and it's right toward the end, just whack away, no special way, power attacks preferably. Check out the DS II walkthrough here on GB, there should be more on precisely where. Plus when I got the stone there was no body either.

Actually, I haven't even SEEN a health bar on "???", and my power attacks seem futile. Although I haven't actually been carrying the other quest items, just letting them sit in my chest. I'll start carrying them and see if that helps.

Happy Gaming,

When saying you have to have everything else, do you mean that every other quest must be completed, or rather that every other Quest Item is in the book before you can get it?

And yes, there is a health meter...right where it says his name is ??? when you're hoving over him with your mouse pointer.

Oh, by the way....I did check the walkthrough...but it didn't say anything about having to have all the quest items...although I will give it a try. Thanks.

Hi,
I've finished all quests, I have the three mysterius items, but I still have not the mysterious stone.

how can I do to find "???" to kill him, since there're no more mission's treasure? it may appear no more? since I finished the game, it will be vey boring to play just hopeing it to appear... :-(

The only way to get him to appear is to have a treasure drop from a chest or from a creature that is Rare, Unique, or a Set Item. To increase the chance of having one of these drop, increase the amount of +% to find magic items.

In my party, I have my main character with around +150% to find magic, Sartan with around +120% to find magic and a pet that cannot wear items.

It sounds like you and I are having the same problem though. No more quests to do, and can't get the mysterious stone. But, increasing your +find magic will increase the amount of times the ??? creature appears.

Here's what I did to find and kill the "???" Creature:

Grab all the Rare items that are in green and carry them around with you. The ??? Creature wants to steal them off you when you aren't looking so try to sucker him in that way.

When he does pop on the screen. As fast as you can pause the game, then enable all your power skills and point them at the creature. Then unpause and let him have it! You only have a few seconds so make them count.

If you kill him, he will leave the mysterious stone in your inventory.

We always pause the game as soon as we see him appear, so we can get our party on Mirror and get our best attacks ready.

When I tried to use one of my henchmen's Powers while paused, he suddenly fell unconscious as soon as I unpaused...even though there were no other creatures on the screen and he had over 1500 health.

I even tried holding him in place using Gravity Stone so everyone could nail him with their Powers...but it was somewhat unsuccessful.

Thanks for the advice though! I'll give it another try.

doesn't matter

doesn't matter whether you have items with you or have completed the other quest. Once he appears you have to use your strongest, highest singular damaging power attacks to hit him, usually like brutal attack. If you kill him he will drop a mysterious stone, unless you have already completed that quest on that difficulty or you have done that quest in another person's game..then he won't drop anything.

ahh btw

he doesn't leave the stone in your inventory you have to pick it up, if I remember it correctly.
doesn't matter whether you have items with you or have completed the other quest.
No, it matters. He's lured by magic items which he tries to steal from you. So the more you have, the more he'll pop up.

This would be nice and logic, however it doesn't seem to work completely like this.

If you don't defend yourself then the thief tries to steal indeed items from you.
But it seems that the frequency of his appearance only depends on how often rare/unique/set items will drop when opening a chest or killing a monster. (Amazingly dopping out you rare items out of your packmule won't attract him.)
That the 'pop-up-ility' ;) of the thief would depend on the (amount of) items you carry in your inventroy - i never have heard anything like this before and although i have spend hours with the existing skrit code of DS2 i never have seen any indication.

Of course it's not albe to look inside the game Exe itself so don't hesitate to test it yourself empirically:
Put all your rare/unique/set rings and amulets in your inventory, if possible buy some more rare ones in the shops. And when please tell us if you notice a significantly increased thief occurrence.

killed it

At last I killed

According to the bestiary journal I allready killed "???" 6 times, but the last time he finally dropped the Mysterious Stone.

During a crowded fight in the Mines of Kadarak he appeared. It took a few rare drops before I noticed him. After some slowmotion (space, space, space) I noticed he was going after my main character (level 61 grand sorceress, full packed with loot, including all 3 mysterical items).

Meanwhile "???" allready took some damage from Deru (72-127 throwing axe incl. lightning and fire dmg). A full hit with the combat magic power "Gathered Bolt" did the rest. I'm sure other damage should have worked also. But hey, maybe this info helps you out.

Good luck!

I'm not sure if his HP increase for each difficulty, but I had to do over 10 000 damage to kill him on Elite (Lothar + brutal strike = dead ???)

:D

tru tru...

i trully agree with Killer Koala, this ??? guy appears ONLY from a rare, unique, set DROP... no matter if u r in the middle of a battle or alone in a cave while opening some chest with cool stuff... idea behind killing him is ... LOTS OF POWERS, and ALL OF THEM IN HIS HEAD... the most powerful, such as BRUTAL АTTACK, TAKE AIM (only this should be enough with well buffd ranger)....i think (not sure) u have 3 strikes to bring him down, so be sure ALL of them 2 be the MIGHTIEST... i was playin for half an hour and he appear 4 times.... but the drop was amazing i dunno i guess i had my day... he can come ANYWHERE, just when u see BLUE AURA, press space, say ur prayers, aim for da HEAD... and kill that filthy shyt...GL

That's because every time he leaps into the ground he "dies" although he only drops the stone if you slammed him down to zero.
I have 3 halfgiant fighters with brutal attack so I got him first time he appeared, thought he was a boss of some sort

Sorry, not true.

I have gotten the stone just by beating him with fists (I try not to kill him. Just to hit him and make him drop the Rares). You do not need to kill him to get the stone. I'd estimate I only did about 5% damage to his total when he dropped the stone. Though I did have full Magic Find % on one char (775% for that party).

The trick to keep him from stealing stuff is to keep hitting him and making him drop stuff. You only need one stone per difficulty level (merc, vet, eliite) so after that, there's no need.

Melee has a trouble cause teh little b***** runs so darn quick, and all over teh place. You are usually in the wrong place at the wrong time. Try arrows, thought he thing's AC is fairly high. I personally prefer "Grave Beam" these days. No chance to dodge it. Only does minimal hits, but unless you are trying to kill him, who cares?

With the Grave Beam, you get one drop every other hit (Pure mages may get more if they use the skill to cast faster. Not sure.). So I wind up getting 4 items every time he shows up.

A trick to Melee, however, would be to pick up all the stuff as you fight (Z key), then pound the little bugger when he tries to steal it (or something else) back.
