Morte and the Pillar of Skulls

I've recently been replaying Planescape and am at the Pillar of Skulls. Last time I did this part I just kicked Morte out of the party before talking to them but I've heard that you can give him to the Pillar and then pull him out (which supposedly gives you a new memory and a lot of exp). However, whenever I try it I fail to get him out, regardless of my ridiculously high STR, DEX, INT, and WIS (courtesy of tattoos and charms). Does anyone know how this feat might be accomplished? Or if it's even possible?

You couldn't pull him out again, despite having a high dexterity or intelligence? That's strange. I did it successfully, on two run-throughs.

Hmmm, maybe I need to reinstall the patch or something. I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually...

Ok, I'm stumped. I used a hack to max out the Nameless One's stats but still couldn't pull Morte out. Is there some alignment or level requirement instead? Hopefully the Planescape walkthrough will shed some light on my quandary when it gets farther along.

Kayless, perhaps it's a sequence of dialog that won't let you do this. What are your action/dialog options exactly before you try to remove Morte from the Pillar?

It's not worth putting Morte into the Pillar of Skulls, i don't remember any benefits for doing this (no new memories, exp points or stat increases). The requirement is that you have to be a double specialist i.e. reach level 12 with the same class that you first reach level 7. Oh, and you also lose some HP permanently (i think 5HP?).
