Help me play with patch 1.15

I just build a new PC (2.4 Core 2 Duo, 2 gigs of RAM, 8800 GTS) and played some TQ - standard install, no patches - and everything worked fine.
After hooking the new rig up to the net and installing antivirus, firewall and getting all the latest Windows updates I could no longer play the game (when I click the TQ shortcut it just doesn't proceed to load the game. Same thing if I start up the disk and click 'Play Titan Quest').
I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the game, with the same results.
Then I downloaded the 1.20 patch and was able to run the game again.
Now, after finishing the game I don't want to play it with the 1.20 patch, so I uninstalled it and tried with the 1.08 patch, the 1.11 patch and the 1.15 patch - and I wasn't able to start the game with any of those (just to check, I then upgraded to the 1.20, and sure enough it still works with that).
But I don't want to play with that patch (for various reasons). Any ideas on how I get the game to work with any of the previous patches? (Or just the basic install, as that worked fine for me initially.)
