Effect of intelligence/strength on melee damage

Hi everybody

I'm a french titan quest player and I've been searching in french forums the answer to one of my "metaphysical" wondering, without results. Well anyway, there is the question :

I know that boosting intelligence increases the elemental damage (melee, staff and maybe  spells), and that strength increases direct melee damage....but how much??? Does anyone knows about an evaluation of these two rises ? Is there a formula like :

average dmg = weapon dmg *(strength/100 + bonus %dmg) + element dmg *int/100

(note : this one seems simple....and false)

In fact I have a level 43 thane(warfare+storm) and a level 40 battlemage(warfare+earth) melee caracters that are both interested in direct and elemental damage and I don't know how to increase their attributes.....
(400<strength ?, intelligence ?, dexterity ? next thread effect of dex on critical hits   : I don't know about this either).

Well if someone has an advice, Iwould be very gratefull !!

NB : Sorry for langage mistake(s).

I don't remember the formula but I do know where to find it (and other useful formulae in the game).
