I remember having this same problem when playing NWN. Been like 5 years ago, but I ~think~ it was my firewall preventing the connection.
1) Try hosting the game for yourself on the LAN connection. (you don't even need to be online for this). This may let you make your nick that way and no problems from there.
2) If hosting yourself get you errors, or your nick is refused again when joining your friend's, then TEMPORARILY disable your firewall and try to connect. Your anti-virus program may also be too aggressive and be blocking this.
IF I remember correctly (big IF, my memory sucks), this only happened to me until I dropped my firewall to connect once. I can not be sure whether NWN created a patch to fix this though, or if it was simply a one time glitch on my side. I'm lucky if I can remember what I ate yesterday, let alone what I did on the PC 5 years ago:laugh:
Good luck

afaik, no.
DS2 is meant to be single player or MP with friends. About the only way to have two "main characters" is to take whichever NPC matches what you want the other character to be (ie take Deru if you want a ranged fighter) and then build them up from ground level.
Unfortunately, this means you will lose teh work/items/gold on the oen character.
Aside from NPC's initiating quests (and some chatter along the way), they act just like your main or pets. Have to stick with the name though *shrugs*
