I just purchased this game and looked through the trees briefly and decided on the storm tree for my first one, that being said I'm not entirely sure what's a good compliment.
I'd think that a melee / archer type would go well, whereas 2 caster elements would kind of be redundant... is hunter / storm a good mix? anyone have some suggestions?

Welcome to the forum.
Well i wouldnt say that having 2 caster classes would be a bad thing. They would in fact compliment each other doing more damage. For instance an earth+Storm char would do both fire and cold/lightning damage which are both elemental damages and when u add intelligence it increases elemental damage which stacks together. Good second classes for ur mastery i would recommend would be hunting if u wanna be an archer. Warfare/dream/defense if u want to be a melee. Your probably better off starting out with a melee character so u get a good feel for the enemies. Be prepared to die alot. The way to prevent this is to buy a lot of health potions and to hit the health button when ur health gets to halfway. And yes hunting and storm is a great build. Arrows packed with storm nimbus will slow ur enemies significantly. Anything that slows and does damage over time will suit the bow user

Yeah I've been an avid diablo II player prior to this so it does play very similar, with some differences here and there, all in all it's a very fun game.
the nimbus ability with a bow is working pretty well, I think I'm going to go hunter, cause I like the idea of archer / slow abilities, however is like dream / spirit or w/e work well too?
ultimately do all of the skills combine well with one another or are there just some no-no's?
thanks for your help

Dream/Spirit melee is quite a powerful combo. With spirit you get a lot of reduction to enemy health and dream is the most powerful class and deals a lot of damage. Well the only thing to do is to experiment. The important thing is to not spread ur attributes too thinly. For example if u chose rogue/hunting then u really only have to add points to dexterity and a few to strength. Where as a juggernaut build might be a bit harder because ull need intelligence for the elemental damage, strength for equipment and base dmg, youll also need need dexterity to help u avoid critical hits. You just have to make sure that ur build will do enough damage and defense to be able to survive in the later stages of the game. All builds can work but some make life a lot harder

I was pretty impressed with my Oracle, Storm + Spirit. Squall (and its upgrade), and Ternion (and upgrade) away, coupled with the Lich & the Whisp for its aura and the awesome Storm Nimbus.
