Wirt's Leg

I have had it for 1-1/2 games now and still have yet to find a use for it. Does anybody have an idea?

You use it to make a portal to the Secret Cow Level. After you have finished a level, ie Normal, go back to Act 1 and fetch Wirt's leg from Tristram. Put it in your Cube together with only a Tome of Townportals, mix and you will get a red portal at the place where you are standing. When you enter the portal, you are at Secret Cow Level, where you have to fight hoards of cows.

After each difficulty level (Normal, Nightmare, Hell), there will be a Secret Cow Level. Each character can only make one portal for each difficulty level. Long ago, the cows used to be a perfect levelling place because they yielded a lot of XP. Nowadays it's heavily nerfed, but the good thing with the cows is that they have a drop class that makes them drop more gems, charms and jewels. Excellent if you are looking for those godly jewels and charms!

Remember you can only make the portal standing in the town of act 1.

Thanks. I have to say the cow level sounded much cooler than it actually was. I went there from the normal level and got very little to show for it. Hopefully it will be better the second time from the nightmare level.

That's funny. As I recall, the loot the cows dropped was mouth watering. It included 3 items of the Assassin set I was collecting. Brilliant, I tell you.

Do remember, all drops in the game are completely random and based off of level. So, there's always a chance that you get nothing but crap. I've gone through the cow level getting one crappy set (Civerbs Cudgel) and the rest, useless rare and magic items.

Guess I was really lucky on that run through...

Oh, and just so we're clear, when we say "run through it" we do mean kill every single cow. You only get one chance for every difficulty, and that's enough reason to not ignore even just a set of two cows.

afaik thats not true, atleast when i played the game you could recast the portal as often as you wish if you do not kill the cow king ;)

but this is quite some versions ago :/

Even so, kind of a pain to go all the way through the stony field, all the way through tristram again, just to get the Wirts Leg, and the come back to do it again. I mean, even if you are an unstoppable killing machine to these level of monsters, it's still a drag nonetheless.

This is still correct. If you play in a team and you want to redo the cows, you can just exit with one character and that character will be able to cast a new portal in another games.

As I said above, the main reason for why you would want to do cow runs it that they have a drop class that makes them drop jewels (and gems and charms) more often than ordinary monsters. Since they are so many and not very difficult, it's you best chance to get that godly 40 ed/15 max dam or IAS jewel, for instance.

Like I said I have only gone through on the first level so far but I did kill every cow...I'm kind of anal retentive that way... and I got mostly flawed or chipped gems and gold. I did get one set item which oddly enough came from one of the random cows.

If you're getting a massive amount of flawed and chipped gems, this is a good thing considering what putting three of the same kind in the cube can do. A lot of the point about the cow level is that you get good gem drops and even better if you have the cube on hand, effectively that is (The cube doesn't actually effect drop rates).

Actually I didn't know that about the gems...thanks.

Just so I'm clear...you can't get to the cow level until you have completely finished a level? In otherwords I have to stop Diablo in Nightmare Level to go back to the cow level again?

Yes, that's correct. (Or Baal if you play LoD, of course).

Oddly enough I haven't started LoD yet. I'm on my second trip thru the original campaign. Thanks for confirming.

Well that's why the cow level sucked then. LoD is just ungodly better with the cow level. Drops are better, and since there's two new types of gems (one with like 50 or 60 subtypes [runes] and another that can have virtually any magical property in the game [jewels]) there's just no comparison.

Cow level in normal diablo 2 is an easter egg. In Diablo 2 Lord of the Destruction, it's a weekend safari zone, you sometimes go their for the gems just because you say "hmm, sure what the hell why not. I can always use a few more runes, see if I can complete this runeword."

Go on normal, and go to Tristram from the stony field (the portal is permanent), just grab the leg again.
