problem applying patch 2.4.0

hey guys i have the original world of warcraft (no burning crusade) and i download 2.4.0 and i tried to install it but it came up with a message saying that it need 2.0.0688 or something like that does anyone know how to fix this i was kinda looking forward to playing

Sounds like you have the 2.0.0688 (or something) to 2.4.0 patch when your current version isn't 2.0.0688 (or something). This raises the question, where you got the patch. Through the autoupdate? If not, just run that.
You can otherwise try running the repair tool (Repair.exe in your wow directory) or reinstalling.

Use blizzard's updater to update your game - it will download and apply all the patches in order that you need to be at the latest version. This can be a lengthy process though - when I first got the game it took about 16 hours to download and install all the patches using blizzard's patch download client that comes with the game.
