what is the use for charms in the beginning?

Erm....they explain the function of the monster charm on the charm itself. Right click, put into appropriate item (such as Armor for boar hides) and you get that added.
You can have 5 monster charms combined into a whole charm, or 3 relics into a whole relic. These give a completion bonus once all combined, (with the example of boar hide, if it gives 4 armor for each you'd get 20 armor for all five combined plus another bonus to something, it could be damage resistance, or it could be defensive ability, it could even be more armor).
