Purchasing: Does the Genre Matter For You?

In the past couple of days, I am sure that most of us KotOR fans have been trying to come to terms with the fact that it's going to be an MMO. I am sure that some are less happy then others about that fact in general, and I'd encourage all of you to share your sentiments in the GameBanshee Polls forum within this thread.

Do you think that this will change if you buy it or not? I have never been one for pay to play and if KotOR goes this way, I'd be a little concerned. My experiences with MMOs involve mostly free games and a little Warhammer Online. I'd be willing to give this a go, but I'm sure that I'm not going to be as happy as I would have been if we had been getting a new RPG, than an MMO.

On the other side, with Bioware doing it, there is a little bit of light. They did make the better of the two KotORs, and have had Mass Effect, and numerable MMOs, to help streamline what they should do for the right MMO to come out.

Are you still going to purchase this game?

beats the hell out of me... i mean, i love the era, but to just drop the storyline and pick up 300 years later in an MMO that nobody knows what to think about, it seems a bit too harsh of a letdown on the fans, just for the sake of money.

afterall, that's what the MMO is about for them. let LucasArts cover it up with whatever terminology they want about immersing the fans in an interactive, global community to explore the Old Republic era together. really, it all boils down to "hey, let's **** over the story and disappoint the fans, just so we can make a couple bucks a month!"

Agree with Darth. It's cynical. Maybe it's the future of gaming, but it's not a future I'd like to be a part of. K1 and K2 had set up for a sequel with so much promise in terms of an RPG, but I have absolutely no interest in playing an MMO.

I will buy the game, MMO or not (and whether I have the system required to run it or not, if only to see what's become of the franchise).
I've never played an MMORPG, maybe this'll be a good one to familiarize myself with the genre. You never know how good it is till you play it, right?

agreed, for the most part. i however, will probably try the game at least for the first month.
if it fails my approval, it's back to WoW for me.
if it passes, i guess i could go on with TOR.
if it truly exceeds my approval, then more than likely i'll keep playing. unlikely to happen, though

I am almost positive that TOR is NOT a sequel to KOTOR. I heard that there will be a KOTOR III but not in the near future. The simple fact that TOR lies in the same era Dosent mean its a sequel to the game itself.

Whether they will do a KotOR III in the future or not, developing an MMO first means they'd come up with any sequel a lot later. The more time there is between the releases of KotOR II and III, the more those games will differ from each other. It'd be a shame to make KotOR III a completely different experience from KotOR II's, IMHO.

It depends very much on the game play mechanics the MMO would contain.
I am almost sure I'd buy a single player KOTOR3 (unless they dumped it too much down and introduced something stupid as level scaling or Oblivion-esque mechanics) - but for MMOs I'm more careful, simply because they'll either be a complete waste of time, or a complete waste of time due to much fun.

I'm an avid MMO player, have played several in my time both in beta and retail, and I do miss a sci-fi MMO on the market. Tabula Rasa bombed, Anarchy Online was okay in its hayday but .... and well, EVE Online is a bore fest of grind to me.

So there is in my view a market for a Sci-fi or two.

However what SW:TOR has going against it at the moment is actually Star Trek Online. That and the fact that MMO audience is now a lot more fickle due to larger market and more choice within that market.

So it depends fully on what they do with the game, and not as much if it is RPG or MMORPG that I decide on.

I do think - however - it is a flaw that they did not stick with RPGs, because all things considered MMOs are not suited for a dynamic storyline because the world has to be static. Your choices can't affect the world in a MMO, but only some dialogue options etc.
And I'd very much have liked to played a KOTOR3 as I really liked KOTOR2 and also KOTOR1 (although that was way to predictable for me to score it high)

I guess we'll see once the news flow intensifies.....

I will not try this game for a few reasons.
The biggest: I'm not willing to pay X ammount of dollars per month to expirience a game that will fall short of it's potential in RPG form.
Next: Even If I was willing to play, I can't. My comptuer is a piece of crap, so I have to go to a friends house to play MMO's. It's worse for me since I'd have to aquire a good computer when I have an xbox 360 elite that could've been used to play, say... KOTOR 3.
And Lastly: They completely thrown teh story to the side and moved ahead 300 years in the future. Now, Unless Revan and The Exile found the fountain of youth and were around to finish their story, I'd have to get into a whole new story along with 3 billion other loud, obnoxious people. Pft. the last thing I want is to try and here plot points while someone is calling me a low level noob that he could own before bed time. Sorry, but let me help Revan and the Exile defeat the true sith by myself.
Yep, EA, Bioware, and Lucas Arts can suck an egg because I aint playing their game.

I wish Bioware all the best, but I'm not buying it as I'm not a big fan of MMOs.

I am undecided at the moment.

Part of me wants to not buy it but part of me wants to get it just to find out what it is like.

Maybe I will see if I can sign up for the BETA testing and if I do not like it at all then I will not buy it.

I used to like MMO's (it is through a MMO that I met my partner) both he and I have had enough of them.

And even though I love Bioware games, I just have a bad feeling about this one.
