trouble picking up cage fragment

I am in the second level and when I get the the first tower I am unable to pick or equip the cage fragment so I can burn down the tower. I have tried emptying my inventory and unequiping my weapon. Tried with a couple of different characters.
Anyone have a suggestion?

IIRC, you have to attack the cage to create the cage fragment, and then you should be able to pick up the fragment like a regular object. If that's what you're doing and it's not working, what happens when you try to pick up the fragment?

The cage is destroyed, when I pick up the cage fragment the character drops it again on the first try then won't pick up at all after. I wasn't sure if this was a bug or a problem on my end. When I went through Merc. level there was no problem with this.

@SunSwan: Check once the loot-filter in the game options - maybe you have set to ignore worthless/unmagical items!?

Thanks KillerGremal, I thought that was very good advise so I went in and checked all my filters. Still with the same result. I saved and closed the game, went back in, made sure the filters were all check and they still pick it up and drop it the first time then won't pick up again.

Did you talk to the prisoner at the first tower? Did you try to pick up the fragment with a companion instead of your main character? Have you had trouble picking up anything else? What does your quest log say?
Edit: I just noticed that you said you'd already completed the quest once on Mercenary. Did you for some reason keep the fragment from that time through and stick it in storage? Maybe you're only allowed to have one fragment.

This may be a stupid question but is there room in your inventory?

Nope, no other fragments in my inventory and I have lots of room in inventory for all the characters(not a stupid question, sometimes its the simplest things you forget to do). I even tried to put my weapon in inventory to pick up the fragment incase it would go directly to the weapon space but still doesn't work.
I have spoken to the prisoner before and after trying to get the fragment and it doesn't do anything.
