Craig is referring to ToTSC the 4 warders that prevent access to the lower levels, the only way i ever effectively defeated them was with large bouts of cheese :D

Hmm...I never had any serious difficulties beating them. They weren't the easiest, but as far as I can remember, not particularly difficult either. Don't remember the tactic I used though =)

My party was:
Me, a dwarven fighter
Ajantis
Minsc
Yeslick
Imoen
Dynaheir

I just summoned creatures until I couldn't find my own characters and that was enough buffer to kill them after a while.
Helped that I had Xzar and Edwin and a lot of wands of monster summoning (3 I believe) plus my mages where level 7 or at least after the slaughter they were :D

Well i had my wizard throw in a cloudkill, and then gave my thief potions of invisibility and had him fire arrows of biting. I lured them out one-by-one, but sometimes one of the others came too.

Which one was pride(fighter, mage, thief etc.)???

The fighter never comes till the end. The thief is a problem and should be meeled by one of you big guys. Mage should be battered down too.
The other guy(fihgter/cleric) has got a few spells IIRC but isn't too tough. THen backstab the fighter to death.

Its been a while since i played the game. :(

It helps i believe if i remember and pride is the fighter, to put your biggest tank in some full plate, give him the golden girdle with a -3 to slashing, and cast some buffer or a potion of defense. Pride will still hit him but if you haste the tank he should be able to go toe to toe with pride.

I had used all the monster summoning available, spells and wands of summoning that is. I had set my party near a corridor with the summoned monsters in the front line, and then one of characters just lured Pride right to the trap.

Ok, it wasn't such a grandiose battle, but I had had enough of the previous battles of the level, and not a lot of patience left.

Cheers

Lured them out one by one???
when i killed the warders they attacked solo only, first i killed the gong fella, then the pride guy(not a hard battle, my PC(max lvl fighter with drizzt's scimitar +5 and minsc took care of him rather easily took some dam though)

dynaheir rocks, she's perfect. no summoning but that's what the wands are for.

craig,

summon some skeletons and maybe use the wand of monster summoning a couple of times. cast all your buff spells invisiblility 10', sanctuary, potions of giant strength, haste, stoneskin, resist fear, use some charm protection .

additionally, i've had good luck with melf's and chromatic orbs, i usually stay away from area effect spells with this fight due to all the summoning I usually use. the sanctuary will allow a cleric type to get in a good position to cast a dispel magic. the mage casts all kinds of protection. oh yeah, arrows of biting and dispelling work great also.

get those skeletons in the way of the spellcasters. they're bound to waste a dire charm or two on them.

the battle is very doable. it's what comes later on that's truly difficult. you've never seen the lower levels of the tower. it shouldn't be spoiled. wipe these guys out and press on. durlags tower is the best area in any of these games, by far.

she's no edwin, but she can hold her own. she can't learn skull trap either, I believe. No manual in front of me right now. so if skull trap is your thing, maybe she isn't
