Just go online to Gamespy.com first (with CD" in your drive) then enter the forum. Here you get an option to create or join a game (and you have not yet loaded your CD

)
Choose between create/join (not forgetting to have a pc ready for import) then your game will fire up.
If you load your game first offline, then click on multiplayer and try to do it that way you may have problems depending on your ISP.
Go online first....

I know someone else who had a cable modem and had great difficulty in multiplayer.
I have a normal modem and use TCI/TP. Try it it might work for you...
If I select MPlayer I lose the option to create a game - can only join. I have used modem connection before but that was to connect to a remote modem (ie not via the net but via telephone line)

Are you literally wanting to play online with other people or just set up a multiplayer game so you can create all your own characters?
The other person who was having this problem with a cable modem just wanted to set up his own party.
I set up a multiplayer game for him (not taking on any NPCs - left that to him) and emailed it to him. He then unzipped it into his save folder and replaced my chars with his own exported ones. Hey presto!
If this is your intention - I still have the save game file - I could send it to you if you wish - just drop me an email putting Baldurs Gate in the subject.
If you are wanting to play online I would suggest you contact
Support@Interplay.com - they may be better able to advise.
It must be something to do with cable modems.....
