Install problem

A search yilded no result, so I ask.

About once a year I have a go at BG on my XP (sp2) computer as it does not work on Vista (*spits*).

However this time, BG did not work and in SoA I could not pick up anything. I tried to reinstall/repair, but it did not help. I uninstalled while cursing the many mods I had to reinstall, then tried to install again.

Great was (is) my disappointment, every single time I get to 63% install there is a problem with some sound data(? I think) and the installation aborts.

Edited to add; seems to be a cyclical redundancy error concerning the Hdo Data???

Oh what to do? It worked a year or so ago

Thanks for any provided aid, which I hope is forthcoming.

But it works on neither

Guess I will try and format the XP PC later if no better explanation comes up, Vista is, IMO a virus in itself :(

Thanks.

It is not a virus, I am virus-free.

The exact place it goes wrong is installing SOA\data\SFXSound.bif

The error message is close to the following

Required_Data

hdo_data

E:\data.cab

I/O Error.

I am wondering if my CD is damaged, it has no visible damage, but...

That does sound like a damaged CD issue. Its reading everything else correctly until then and the installshield seems to know what its looking for but simply cannot find it on the disc.

I have 2 SoA copies, 1Tob, 1 BG1 and 1 ToTSC, but I've been contemplating buying myself a new copy of the complete saga and stashing them in case anything ever happened to the ones I've got. I feel more convinced that I should do that!

I just ordered the complete Saga. That will give me two of all of them + an extra BG I that was loaned to me and got me hooked five or so years ago...

I am actually contemplating another complete one, but as I have problems with things such as rent and food ATM, I will likely wait.

Any idea whether they will ever be reproduced? Soon we will likely not be able to run them as the OS continue its development.

Edited to add that The Complete Saga costs about 14 Euro at Coolshop.dk. Insanely cheap if you ask me.

Dang, I'm not sure exactly what that is in dollars but I guess around 20 but thats certainly cheap enough to convince me. I am going to pick up a set at least. Good point on the OS maby we'll be buying up our favorite old OS's in another 5-10 years?

Problem is that if you want to "downgrade" your OS, M$ Window$ will not let you. You will have to partition and reinstall after.

I suspect in 10 years all serious people will be using Linux...

I guess you could keep an old machine around just for playing the BG series, LOL, I've always wanted a cumputer just for that anyways! Seems we always end up getting something for my wife whenever I bring up getting another computer just for gaming ........... hmmm I guess she's figured out that when I bring that up we've got some extra money ........... of course I appretiate the extra convincing on her part :mischief:
