Hardcore, party based game

I've found some of the "battles" (if you can call them that) to be a bit obnoxious in difficulty for the one character party. You can really see how this game emphasizes the "requirement" of having a party of people as opposed to one person. There are some fights which are 99.99% impossible to beat without having at least one more character in your party.
I'm talking about 8 shamans all casting "charm" and "hold" at the same time... making your character having to achieve all saves effortlessly (unless you're a deity, it is very difficult). Combine that with 10 Worg Goblin Riders, 10 Hardened Ice Trolls and you're in for a rude awakening if you're basing your game off of one character's ability. There just aren’t enough Freedom and Healing potions to see you through every single guy who gets the idea of his really kewl “hold” spell he wants to cast without regard to anything else.
I was able to beat Icewind Dale and Baldur’s Gate with one character, but I haven’t even come close here. It gives me mixed feelings. Overall, IWD2 is not as good as IWD although it isn’t a bad game. Everything is a bit of a downgrade however from the original (including graphics).

The game is soloable with any class, I recently soloed a half-orc barbarian.
What are your character's classes and stats ?
"Protection from evil" protects from charm spells but I never had to use the ring. If you get charmed you can simply wait until the spell runs out, you don't get attacked while charmed. There are items which grant immunity to hold spells and once you gained a few levels you'll nearly always make your save and not every caster has to survive his spellcasting.

Call me old school, but to me, D&D games are all about parties, and aren't meant to be about solo adventurers. Playing D&D CRPG's with a solo PC seems entirely too much like some Nintendo game, at least IMO.
Gimme a full party every time!

Yes, I do agree with this completely. I always try to see if a game is solo at first, then go back and really enjoy it with a party. It's wasn't uncommon (as a solo party) for me to run into a "charm battle" in IWD2. A fight would last 30 minutes... 25 minutes of the charms running out (with everyone standing around like a bunch of lamebrains) and 5 minutes of fighting/casting/etc...
Stores are very selective in the game. No "haste" and "mind protection" potions to be found hardly at all... and for good reason (after you see why). It's vicious.

"Protection from Evil" never stopped my chars from being charmed. I was using the ring. Charms are based on will saving throws?

Yes, charm spells are based on Will saving throws. According to the description in the manual, PfEvil
should provide "immunity to control spells or effects", though I suppose that either the PfE spell may be flawed, or perhaps the PfEvil effect on the ring you're using might be flawed.

The effect from the PfE ring lasts only about 2 rounds.
If you cast the spell (or magic circle against evil) it will last much longer.
