Just wondering that is there anyone who post this topic before?
If you don't mind could u please post what type of computer are you using to play BG2 and how's the performance?
mine is P3 500, 64MB ram without 3d acceleration card, SB life, and a 50x CDROM(I don't think this has any effect)
ANd my performance is just ok, sometimes the game will get lagging.

I have a:
Pentium 350
196 M Ram
4 Gig HD - yeah, no full install for me
40 speed CD-Rom
Sound Blaster 16 and all that stuff
I know what you mean about laggy sometimes. However, I've found that doing a quicksave (if I can) will remove the lag.

I play on my 800 mg superslim notebook Vaio with 192 ram and a dvd player (don't know what speed it plays cds) and the game STILL lags sometimes, and crashes at least once, EVERY time I play it.

The game slows down, and occasionally crashes on my PIII933 256meg, geforce2 dts, sb live. Sad, very sad.
Someone suggested turning off environmental audio- will do ASAP.

seems like everyone having that lagging problem. Yeah, it solve when u use a quick save, but it'll be back after some times. Let's see who owns a computer that don't have this problem, or someone who can solve this.

I use a crappy PII266, 64 MB RAM, no 3d acceleration card, but it still works great.

I use a K6-2 500 - TNT2 videocard - 256 MB Ram - 42x CD-Rom.
I don't play with 3D on - because the game seems to run very slow, and I'm not to happy running a game in OpenGL with my graphicscard, because I've had several problems with games, while running OpenGL.

I use a PIII, 64 MB ram, RIVA TNT with detonator driver, 3d on, full install and the only real lag that I notice is area scrolling (not enough memory) and loading an area that I haven't been to at that particular setting (meaning the current game that I am playing )

32MB Geforce 2 video
SB Live! value sound
30GB IBM 75GXP Deskstar ATA100 HDD
Pioneer 16x DVD
Hollywood decoder card (for DVD)
full install
It runs fine @ 800x600 with 3D on and NO environmental audio. EA slows things to a crawl after 20 minutes. If I crank up the resolution to 1024x768 it runs slow during big battles (and it gets too small to see). I didn't try to run it without 3D at the higher res. Things seem to be a little slower when playing a multi-player game (not with other people, just use MP to have more PCs)

PIII 800MHZ, 128 MB RAM, 64 mg Voodoo 5 Banshee, 30 Gig harddrive, 50x CD-ROM, SB Live!, 19" monitor, 4 speakers, and I still have game problems... it's been forever since I've gotten to play. The game itself runs fine, but the save/loading has gotten intolerably slow for an as yet unknown reason.

I did the full Install. I am not noticing any real choppiness or slow down problems. However, this game will crash every 2 hrs or so when I play. I am running it w/3D acceleration.
Its disappointing to hear that the EAX leads to problems, I was planning on upgrading to a SoundBlaster Live to hear if that Environmental Audio made any difference.
I tried running the game at higher resolutions and didn't have any problems, however (I have 21" monitor and wanted to get that full view of the map feeling), it was really hard to make most things out, so I decided to play in 800x600 mode.

Hmm ok guess I'll break the chain and let you know my EA runs just fine.. Here is what I put together a few years ago and am still using..
AMD K6-2 333
128mb PC100 SDRAM
Sound blaster Live
Velocity 4400 Video card
8gig Bigfoot HD
I guess I'm just fortunate enough to not have the crashes/lockups/or lagging at all when I play.. only thing I can think of that I might have done differently than anyone else is I turned the volume down on the environmental audio stuff down to where I can hear it but that it's not annoying enough to make me turn down my master volume so as not to go crazy.. if I can help any of you at all I would be happy to try although I'm not a programmer or a high money tech.

Hi everyone,
I've been reading these posts for the past two weeks but I felt compelled to reply to this survey. My computer is amazingly:
Pentium ONE 233 MMX
64 MB RAM
6 GB HardDrive ATA/66
12X CDROM Drive (Speed unsure but most likely this)
ATI 3DExpression (4 MB 3D card that uses five-year old technology--the mach64 chip)
Soundblaster AWE 64 PCI card (precursor to SB live)
Windows 98 Service Pack 2 (not SE edition)
Played both Full and Recommended Install
I have absolutely NO problems playing this game at 640 * 800. Because of the limitations of my video card, I cannot play the game with 3D effects, nor can I utilize EAX environmental sounds. I happily play this game and have only had ONE exit-to-windows crash through 3 different completions of the game. And when I play in 640x480 mode, the config settings that are set with the BGconfig program are at the "average" position.
I am now playing at 800x600 mode (!!!) and even I can play this game with a framerate set at 24 (see BGconfig program), all other settings set at "average" (i.e., all weather effects on, animations on, etc.), but with NO footstep sounds. And I am very happy with the speed of the game. Of course, persistent spell effects such as multiple cloudkills truly kill the game speed, but this was expected due to the slow speed of both my CPU and my video card.
More importantly, to compare with Magus' problem, I do not experience any bizarre slowdown effects associated with saving/loading games. I have gone to sleep numerous times with the game running unpaused (for dialogue reasons), and returned to play with no detriment.
My game is patched with the latest English version patch, and has no other override patches except for the Collector's Edition merchants. I quicksave on average every 2 hours of real life time, and I keep on average 8 savegames purely out of my own compulsion. As mentioned in a previous post, loading new areas that are not in the game cache (mine is set to 300 MB) are persistent chokepoints, but that is a constant limitation of all games.
My only quibble is that despite the annoyance of switching CDs when playing a Recommended install game, the game loads new areas marginally faster than with a full install, and my full install game actually repeats/echoes character sounds during massive hard drive readings. Arguably this is either a problem with hard disk access times or with the low bandwidth of my ATA66 Hard drive, a hard drive designed for Pentium I motherboards. It is not a problem with the game.
I'll try to end this longwinded survey by saying that game engines that are 2D in origin and have been upgraded to include 3D effects often display certain peculiarities and instabilities. Case-in-point, Diablo II comes with 3D support for spell effects as well, and initially there were in-game problems with NVIDIA cards that had 64 megs of video SDRAM. Also, I have never played Baldur's Gate, but I believe that if the first game was started in 1996 as the manual introduction states, it is possible that a majority of the engine was coded for use on Pentiums and Pentium IIs. Alas, I'm not a true programmer, so I don't know how valid my last few thoughts are. THanks for reading.

Well just to show you all how computer illiterate I am .
PIII
192 RAM
Video card ... I have no idea.
10 Gig HD
CD-ROM... I have no idea.
17 in. Monitor
Sound.... I have no idea.
The only time I have any problem is when I start experimenting with the stuff I probably shouldn't be messing with in the computer.
.
As for BG2 the only slow downs are when there's a lot of spells going on.

PIII 733, 128 RAM, GeForce, 133 FSB
I have had problems with lag every time I fight a dragon. I have also had that bothersome problem with movies. Apparently the game doesn't like the VIA Apollo chipset (133 FSB) and any version of DirectX (I've tried DX6, DX7, DX8).
