I would suggest elven ranger, they r still good in bg1 and when you get the tome of dex tu will have a elf with 20 dex
.
I am actually doing this at the moment, although i am unsure whether to make him an archer when i export to bg2 as an archer with 20 dex will rock but i would hate only being able to wear leather armour, but then if i leave him as a normal ranger do I keep him with bows and two handed weapons or make him into a dual wielding mincer.
decisions decision!!

Personally i cant take it to have a PC with low HP, as you gotta reload if he dies. Now cleric is perfect as he can resurrect all other who dies, yet still take a few

Its a shame then that Clerics seemingly cant hit any enimies, pfft...one star proficiencies
I still love using Viconia though

The leather armor only restriction is really only a problem if you intend to solo. With group mates, you can just hang back and turn your enemies into pincushions, with a couple good tanks, armor isn't terribly neccessary. Though you'll probably want items that give you good ac against missile attacks, then again, your tanks can just rush any missile attackers and force them to use melee attacks. Seems to me the more dangerous enemies are spellcasters of one sort or another, and AC won't help you against them. But having a good ranged attack can keep'em from casting much, if at all.
