Playing KOTOR on PC

Alright, I've finally got KOTOR for the PC, I've played it a million times on the xbox. Just wondering what I will need to make it just as enjoyable as on the xbox. Is there a controller I can use? Or just a mouse, I'm sure using a mouse won't be as fun. lol Haven't loaded it yet, just wondering what I can do first.

Most who play on the PC use the keyboard+mouse, but in my opinion - the interface on the PC version is annoying for PC users because it is very consol-ish, which I personally dislike, because the mouse/keyboard isn't utilized properly.

But if you enjoy playing it on the xbox, why not just stick to the xbox. It isn't like a lot of things are different for the PC?

I don't own, and have never used an xbox, but I can tell u the controls for pc are bloody awful. I suspect, from what you say, that considerable effort has been made to mimic the xbox controller, but all it does is make the keyboard/mouse stupidly complicated.

I gave up after about half an hour. I might go back to it, but I doubt it.

Curious, I never had any problems at all on the PC, but it's probably one of the few games I've played which wouldn't have lost much by being on a console. Although of course there are a few mods for the game, which does give the PC a slight edge, as usual.

Yeah, the xbox broke a while back. You have to press the start button a million times to get it to turn on. ( Any fixes?) Anyway, would playing with some sort of controller help, maybe the 360 controller for the pc?

I'm quite sorry to hear that, Fljotsdale. :( Like galraen, I have never had problems with the controls in this game, and found the point and click, pause and movement set up to be quite easy to learn. Although, perhaps this is nostalgia, considering this was the first PC games I used which had this sort of character view.

I'll give it a shot with the mouse and see how it is, I just know how much I hate losing a battle, especially if it's the controls fault. I also loaded Empire at War, so far it seems way to overly complicated, but hopefully I can learn some tips to play that game as well, it seems really cool if you know what your doing, but I don't. lol

Yeah, just tried it out, the controls are unbearable. It seems crazy to me, the guy just seems to want to run all over and can't get the mouse to actually move him, not sure if it's supposed to. It always seems the graphics aren't quite as good as the xbox version which is very surprising to me. So any easier way as far as controls go, I'd love to have some kind of controller to control everything as that's definitely what I'm more used to.

Alright been playing a little bit more and the controls are getting a little easier, but having two issues. Let's see if anyone can help me out. First, it's seems sometimes the character wants to run way to fast and goes all the way to the other side of the room quick, don't know if you get what I mean but some might. And it seems that the during battles it seems to lag a bit. Not bad, but still bad enough that it's annoying.

Both of those sound like hardware issues rather than game issues. I would go into options and lower the resolution or settings of other things down a bit, to improve the game's smoothness.

I've done that now and it still seems pretty bad, any other things I can do? One of the things it says when it starts the game is insufficient 3D graphics, is that part of the problem?

My guess is that your PC isn't good enough. I never understood what was so hard about the controls either.

Oh well, I'm saving for one. I gave it a shot anyway.

Well I gave it another shot today as I got the bug to play it. Still having the same issue just not as much. I put all the graphics down to the lowest level I possibly could and still not running smoothly. The character seems to just get stuck trying to run and you can't move him around successfully sometimes. I did the "Analyze your computer" option on the start menu and the only thing it failed was for 3D graphics, would this be the issue? It passed every other test required to run the game.

Yes, if there's one test you don't want to fail, it's that one. You need a (back then) decent 3D Graphics card.

Alrighty, thanks. Guess I'll have to wait till I get a new comp sometime.

If that happens, you'll have to contend with your PC being too new, and do all kinds of tricks to make it work at all. :p Don't fear, though, we're here.

Haha, yeah I've heard it loves 64 bit...

I got both KotORs running on a Vista 64bit, so it's doable.

Good to know, I def won't be getting Vista though. This will be a while off probably.... unfortunately. I may try a couple of other comps around the house but I doubt they will fair better... I'm a college student with a limited budget as you can imagine haha.
