Screen size issue

Hi everyone !

Today I encountered a rather annoying problem.
I am playing the game through steam for several days now and it had always run without any problem.
Today when I started it, it was not full screen. Actually, when the game loads, there is a smaller black screen, when usually this black screen is full. And then the first screen with the menu appears, it is smaller, not in the middle of the screen, but rather on the bottom left, and there is a black stripe on the right and on the top of the screen.
The resolution is still the same in the game options (ie 1024x768). So I tried to change the resolution, and after that, it was even smaller. Then I disabled my video card, restarted my computer, and enabled the video card again. And the problem is still here.

What can I do ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Try pressing alt+enter to switch the game to full screen.

Did you install any game patches/mods recently?

Do you have a widescreen monitor?

If I remember correct VTMB doesn't support wide screen, you probably had you monitor setup to stretch the image. You can do that in the monitor setup, or in the control panel of your graphic card, you probably updated your gfx driver, which resets all your settings.

Do you by any chance have one of Wesp's unofficial patches installed? If so, try the following:

1. Exit the game.
2. Browse the the VTM game folder and look for a folder "Tools" inside which you should find RESPATCH.EXE and run it. If you can't find it you installed the "basic" patch and not the "full" patch.
3. The program will prompt you to select a folder. Browse to the VTM game folder and click ok.
4. Respatch will pop up a window (usually in the background--just click alt+tab a few times) then select "16:10", then click "patch it", then click "quit"
5. Start the game, go into the options and set the screen resolution to "1280x800." Quit the game and then restart.

This will modify VTMB to work with a 16:10 widescreen monitor. You can always rerun respatch to switch back to 4:3 or 16:9.

I don't have any unofficial patch installed. And I did not updated my drivers. I did not change any settings at first to stretch the image, I guess it was done automatically (because it was working at first)
But how should I do for those settings to stretch the image again ?

Ah, I didn't know that, I haven't used one of the unofficial patches for ages, I usually just ran the 1600x1200 resolution :)

haelara: on your graphic card control panel, on Nvidia cards, it's in the the Nvidia control panel under Adjust desktop size and position.

How big are the black bars? Is the left side of the game screen missing (i.e. can you see the health meter or is it off screen)? Are you using a laptop or a desktop PC?

Ok, so usually the resolution of my screen is 1280x800. And indeed when I switch it to 1024x768, like the game's, it works in full screen. But the thing is that before, it seemed to switch automatically from 1280x800 to 1024x768 to fit the games requirements. But apparently not anymore...
So what can I do about this ?

Rudiger24, the black bars are I think 10cm on the right and 2cm above. When I then start the game, it is full screen but my blood bar is moved 10 cm to the left, ie the size of the black bar in the menu screen. And I am using a laptop pc.

You didn't say if you can see the health bar (the one on the left side of the screen).

If you had a desktop LCD I would tell you to activate the screen auto-adjust feature (via onscreen menu or button on the display) to line the image up on the screen but I'm not sure how to do that on a laptop.

I would *really* recommend using respatch to alter VTMB to work with your native screen resolution. If you don't want to install Wesp's unofficial patch to get respatch you can download it from the link below. Then unzip it and run respatch.exe and follow the steps I listed above (starting at step #3).

I'm glad it worked, I was running out of ideas.

Just remember that if you ever install the unofficial patch or uninstall/reinstall the game you will need to repeat the respatch procedure.
