Owning buildings

I bought this game for cheap with my new computer. So far, I like it a lot.
My problem is the own/ rent thing. So far I own 3 houses (rent 2), the brothel, and 2 shops by accident.
OK, so as the game progresses, I make 0 on these buildings. What am I doing wrong? I heard that shops are supposed to flip you money every few hours. I got nada. I heard house rentals are supposed to make money too. I have had 1 house for 11 game days and nada.
