I have been playing around with a couple of different problems I came up with.

Anomen Leaving when a messenger comes up... SHOOT THE MESSENGER:mischief:... a nice couple volleys of magic missles... will keep the bad news of his father's death coming.

Ilithium .... I summoned a fiend... it killed Sir Sarles... and I got the ilitum back... No faction lost... NPC turned Hostile, but I didnt attack them... quest was completed as well.

Killing messangers is a solution to every unwanted NPC-related quest ;)

As for illithium, in unpatched game you can also command your PC to talk to charles (while having Illithium in inventory), pause, drop the illithium, unpause. The game checks for quest items only when you command your char to talk to someone.

This IS fixed in fan-made fixpacks! (beware!)
