I have been carrying around a letter which contains a riddle (Why does a chair have arms and legs, etc.) Is this just scrap paper?

It has no relation to the story (that I know of), it is just a 100 GP letter.

another paper is the authograph scroll from larry, darryl. Can I do something with that or is it just there because the programmers thought it was funny?

The letter from Larry, Darryla nad Darryl is a joke. It's based on an old tv show..Newhart..They were 3 brothers 2 of whom were named Darryl.

In Baldur's Gate, in the Blade and Stars Inn, there's a woman who tells you to find a book in Candlekeep. However, I can't seem to find this book. Is this also a meaningless quest (it's not in the BG walkthrough)?

That would be Shaella - I wouldn't worry too much about her requests!

What's-her-name is a priestess of Leira, the Lady of the Mists. Her entire clergy is based on lies and falsehoods, which makes playing one in actual D&D rather amusing. So, essentially, take nothing of what she says seriously.
