how to get NPC to drop stuff that slows him

Hi there - I've just discovered this site! :)

I'm playing with Otis as an NPC in my party. He fights well, but is carrying several suits of non-magical armour, so is slowed.
When I try to sell or drop them, I get the message 'NPC will not drop that item'.

I realise that the game doesn't want you to recruit an NPC, take all his items and drop him.
But is there a way for an NPC to lose items of little value?

Having looked further, I see there is a patch here that allows you to get NPCs to drop or sell stuff.
Excellent!
(Sorry I didn't see it earlier...)

Heh, no worries.

The way the game is supposed to work, when you speak with a merchant the NPC will sell whatever stuff they've collected. You'll see the merchant say something about taking care of another customer first before he'll deal with you.

But the "humble NPC patch" is definitely the way to go. Without it NPCs are a HUGE pain.

I loaded the 'humble NPC' patch and thus persuaded Otis to drop his redundant suits of armour (etc). :)

The adventure continued, but then my party couldn't pick up treasure. :(

So I reran patch #2 - no improvement, except I took the opportunity to buy Otis loads of leather gloves and boots. ;)

I then added patch #3. Now the party can pick up treasure and Otis will loot coins, but not burden himself with items.

This would have been a superb game if only the developers had been given enough time...

Yeah, the looting bug was a big issue, but it's not caused by the NPC patch, just to clarify for those reading. It's an issue to do with patch two and later versions (or later service packs for) windows. In this particular instance the fault is hard to place on the developers of ToEE, as they can't anticipate changes to OS's before they happen. That said, when Atari pushed this out the door too fast, it was seriously crippled, people knew it, and Atari lost money (and killed Troika). But patched, the game is saweeet. :D

BTW, a better fix for the looting bug, IMO, is moebius' temple.zip fix, which is included in the various later co8 mods, or can be had separately. These and all fan fixes really require that you do not install patch 3, but stick with 2. This is because after moebius' fix, which did what 3 did and more, patch 3 was totally unnecessary. So nobody recoded any of their work for p3. Thus, if you want to run any patches (including the NPC patch, btw), and be free from worries about conflicts, I'd go with p2 and moebius.

It seems Moebius' temple.zip is getting hard to find. None of the old links or mirrors seem to have it any longer.

That means I can't find it atm, but I do know it's included in the co8 mods. My suggestion would be to go to co8.org and check out the forums there for info on the latest mods they have going.
