Intense, uniquely talented music

Music has always been something that impacts me heavily. I've mainly gravitated towards the dark/heavy end of the spectrum but I've always appreciated when someone hits me with a track or band that blows my mind (or soul), regardless of genre or generation.

Since this site is primarily populated with hard core gamers who tend (sorry for the stereotyping) to have non-mainstream personalities, I figured this site might be a potential gold mine for discovering some new things.

Got something most people might not have heard that we are poorer for not knowing about? Share it! I'll try to kick things off.

Don't get me started about talking about this band. I could write a book on what I get from them. It's important to watch the video from front to end, uninterrupted or the message get lost/diluted. It packs a punch IMO.

YouTube - Sigur Ros - Glósóli

By the way, the band is incredible live. I hope this sample motivates you to dig deeper because there's a lot to find.

That's indeed quite the piece of music, even by Stereophonics standards. :) Note that EMI Records has stuff on Youtube that isn't viewable in every country. I found another copy through Google:
Dailymotion - Sigur Ros - Glosoli - une vidéo Musique

Before I post my two videos (and a few extras), I just have to say that if there is one thing I've learned about how people appreciate music, it is that they do so very differently. And there is really no way of leveling the playing field between them. Taste is requisite to how we experience things, and I am all about these next two bands. I very much expect not everyone to find them intense or perhaps even talented. It's just that I do. ;)

~

I've always liked post rock, both the making and listening. You may have heard of Arcade Fire. They have a lesser known side project call Bell Orchestre that tries to make the same kind of noise with mostly live instruments or otherwise acoustic mixes. That results in some very cool noises, like these:

- Bell Orchestre - 'Stripes'

If you have subscribed to any music download service such as Spotify (free) or Last.Fm, I encourage you to look for a particular work of art called "The Stars in his head" a Colin Stetson remix done by the Bell Orchestre. It's hard to find otherwise. It's a full remix of a solo saxophone piece, but don't let that fool you. There are no beats, just fantastic play with percussion tapped/smacked on the saxophone itself during play.

Anyhow, I've known about them for quite some time. A more recent (and regretably late) find of mine is The Most Serene Republic, which comes from the same corner of Canada as the Broken Social Scene, Metric and the Stars. In many senses The Most Serene Republic can sound similarly chaotic and 'full' like the Broken Social Scene, but seem to be well.. 'better' at it than them. Better mixes, better voices, more harmony. Anyway, Youtube link:

- The Most Serene Republic - 'Heavens to Purgatory'

These two groups profoundly rock my Trickies, it's exactly the kind of music I like to make. I am very anxious to see them live, but it has gotten even harder to see good indie bands live since I moved to Oslo. Probably for the best though, as my girlfriend has already accused me of wanting to flatout copy them. 'I must remain pure'. ;)

Ok, time for a drink. Fable?

Wow, nice contributions! I'm already glad I spent the time to launch this thread.

Based on a first listen of everything you linked me to, I liked the Metric A LOT. I first heard of that band abut 3 years ago but never bothered exploring them. What a mistake that was. I get a lot of Joy Division and Pixies from that song which relates to my own core preference of influences.

Thanks Tricky.

Hehe, no problem. You know, it just occured to me I just recommended a whole slur of Canadian bands to someone who is apparently Canadian himself. ;)

Canada is where it's at these days?

I am a terrible Canadian. I hate hockey. I worship the NFL instead. That probably gives you a pretty good indication as to how Americanized I am. :(

I bet that everyone knows quite a bunch of their.. tracks.. but most don't know the bands name.

X-Ray Dog. Here are some randomly chosen ones

The Vision
Gothic Power
hell, even Gangsta Goth ;)

There's also Craig Armstrong with masterpieces like "O Verona" and "Escape"

E.S. Posthumus with their Pompeii

Immediate Music with Epicon

Trevor Jones with ones like "Take Off" (Chaos movie soundtrack)

..and so on.. and on, and on. (i could list both artists and tracks like that forever)

Intense? As hell. Breathtaking. (not to mention Clint Mansell's most known track.)

These would make a picture of cheese dramatic and spectacular. They fit everything, and are great for any game recordings. (trust me on that one)

Edit : One that will probably be much less known is Akira Yamaoka, who made music to Silent Hill. Example

Solar (Russian heavy metal; practically brand new): News — www.solarband.ru

IMO they share some musical similarities with Nightwish. As far as I can tell you can't actually buy the album anywhere, but they have the tracks to download on the website.

stworca man, I never even considered pieces produced for movies and games but you're right...there is a lot of killer stuff out there to explore.

If I had a nickel for every time I saw someone on the net ask "what's the track they play in X movie at the part where Y does Z???"

kozeph, really dug the Fever Ray. Checked out a bunch of their other stuff as well. It's consistently good. Definitely unlike anything I've really spent time listening to in the past.

The french one was little more of a reach for me personally, but I appreciate you throwing it out there.

I'm not sure I would call that 'metal', but I'm not sure I could deny it either...not that it's really important how I decide to classify it.

Honestly, the orchestral part was pretty busy and the flute really threw me for a loop. Definitely unusual sounding. Will give it another shot in few days.

Nice add nonetheless.

Okay, here's some more fuel for the fire.

1. Since stworca mentioned flicks, here's a clip from a pretty dark movie called Winter Passing. Just as some set up, Will Ferrell plays this maladjusted adult who is coaxed into performing at a small town bar. He's uber talented but can't play guitar *and* sing without getting stagefright. He can do one or the other just fine, but not both. So he's recorded his guitar backtrack so he can do the vocal part. Pretty intense scene within the context of the movie.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNhnXQn8ckE

2. This next track is a Skinny Puppy remix that almost no one knows about. It's pretty intense in the sense that as the track progresses, it just keeps adding more layers. Definitely don't judge it by the first 60 seconds you hear. It get's crazy and it's got a hard edge for sure. If you have sub-woofers...now is definitely the time to push them to the limit.

If I ever produce a movie, it's going to be part of the soundtrack guaranteed.

A lot of those tracks are only 2-3 minutes long which is kind of weird. I feel like I'm listening to really mellow, instrumental Ramones

But in all seriousness, this Fever Ray album is blowing my mind. And I have to be honest...I'm not a fan of female vocalists in general.

Not surprising that those tracks are so short, since they were composed for film trailers. :)

'like' is a severe understatement. I want to give her 2 more children!

She's like a female Maynard James Keenan. She uses disguises and atmosphere to subvert her presence on stage...to make it more about the music and the experience. Gotta respect that.
