New to Dungeon Lords... problems

I like this game, it has a certain charm to it. There are two things however that I don't understand:
1) when you die there is no "load game" option... maybe I'm old fashion but this is where one might want that particular option *shrugs* ...but you have to quit playing and start from the main menu?!?
2) ...the archery, is it really this bad or is there something I'm missing. Is there perchance a mod to make it ...usable? I mean I know a crosshairs might be perceived as cheating, but due to the wacky camera controls and all that it might just be a good idea, I dunno... I just can't get comfy with the archery this way, and I am ALWAYS an archer... it's my thing.
There are other things about it that are just ...odd and will take some getting used to. I really like this game though I dunno what it is about it really. Of course I am still lost in the sewers... yay me

Well, it's a 5-year-old game with a lot of bugs, so not a whole lot of fans.
Dungeon Lords has a major imbalance in its combat system. Ranged weapons, while useful on occasion, are mostly worthless. Magic is far too powerful. Archery does get a little bit better with higher-level bows and more skill, but not a whole lot better. As for aiming, if this were a FPS instead of an 3rd-person action RPG, that would be a good idea. Instead, take advantage of the fact that all you need to do is shoot, and the game aims for you.

When you get killed, wait for the enemy to go away, then hit r to revive, but doing that reduces your stats by 1 point.

I was thinking something like how Gothic 3 is set up with it's archery, I think if the archery was done that way this game would double in enjoyment. The way it is now it just feels... weird, especially in a closed in place like the sewers.
...as for the game being old. I like alot of the older games, they have a certain je ne sais quoi that has been lost to make room for stunning graphics and realism alot of times. This game has some of that old school goodness left in it... just some wonkiness that should be ironed out. I mean take Oblivion, that game goes from pretty good but watered down... to freakin amazing with the right mods... and there are TONS of mods for it. I just think a few mods would make this game classic.

It's very unfortunate that this game is not modder-friendly.

the only mod I came across for the game was a modification done by -File Read Error - (from here I think) I haven't tried it yet, I wanna play it for a while unchanged just to see the changes it makes in comparison.

It probably is the only real DL mod that exists in the whole universe... this game is way too old and therefore it really doesn't have a lot of fans nowadays. Of course it's quite fun at first but I'm always getting sick of it either after the Tomb of Souls or shortly before entering it for the first time. In the end this game always feels the same and every character will be a god on earth if leveled up to about level 40 (unless the player makes completely irrational skill choices)! My mod was an attempt to solve this problem... but it doesn't work, a level 40 character is still a god, no matter if my mod is installed or not. What it does is spawning more enemies (and more difficult versions too) who are sometimes equipped with "very strong" weapons but that's still not enough to make the game hard for a high-level character. Once you have 50+ blast nova spellbooks, everything will be a pushover...

That's why I stick with melee, except for flying pests (bats and bees) that get cataclysmed because I can and I hate them.
Still, I'm pretty much invincible, but at least I occasionally have to use a heal potion.
