THe guy that you meet at a certain point in the maze on hard (before getting a certain companion)?

The hard constructs were rough enough. But this guy...Oh my god.

Actually, you might get to the companion before this guy.
I beat him by unleashing Reign of Anger/Magic Missile, so his spells get interrupted, and then pummeling him. Morte's Taunt can come in handy too. The Insect Swarm lvl 2 spell is useful. I buff up my TNO first with all kinds of defensive spells. It's imperative that you focus on the mage first.
You'll probably have to suffer one hit from his spell Mechanus' Cannon. (I don't recall the exact name, though.)

I can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty certain I used the modron cannon to put him down.

Morte's taunt is very useful. That's a really great suggestion as well.

I doubt you used Mechanus' Cannon, since the only copy of that spell drops from this very Wizard, IIRC.

That makes a lot of sense. I knew I was associating the 2 for some reason

how do you get mortes taunt? or other morte abilities??

Last time I played, I don't remember picking up ANY special abilities for Morte.

He has the taunt by default. Right click to bring up his "circle menu", and select the middle/top option, I believe.
You can improve his Taunt by letting him talk to a harlot and by listening to the quarreling shopkeepers couple in the Lower Ward. Check GB's walkthrough for details.

but you can't make any PCs talk to NPCs except the Nameless One.

So? Use TNO to talk to them then.
