I tried and the game crashes. Can it be done? Or am I doing something wrong? Is EXP level or learned spells going to cause a conflict?

I would imagine it all but impossible.
There are to many differences going from BG2 to BG1. As you mention ei. spell, level, class', items and general programming.

So I don't think it is possible.

It would be fun though, importing a lvl 30 sorceror from ToB into BG1.
You know, finishing the final fight against Sarevok with one crummy deathspell.
