I think swcarter answered about mutagens already, but just to briefly elaborate. Certain rare monsters drop special ingredients. You should have picked up 2 of these by now. One from the frightener and one from the beast. They each make a potion that give a single talent point, those count as mutagens. There will be other rare critters as time passes though several of them come with a choice attached. Choose wisely...

Frightener drops an eye for the Frightener's vision potion, The Beast drops the hellhound's soul. Can't remember the potion name. All the formula should be The Witcher @ GameBanshee in the link. Buy and read EVERY book about monsters and plant ingredients. Books should be your single biggest expense in this game. You can sell scrolls for money once you pick them up, just make sure you read them first.

I can understand Pakmn's frustration. There is no guidance as to how you use these potions to achieve the talent stated. I have had two so called mutagents and I drank the potion and then gone to the the "Talent Tree" and there was nothing there. I have gone to the "Talent Tree" first, but am unable to get at the potion. So how do you achieve the talent it tells you that you are able to purchase???

How to select "special" talents

Has anyone figured this out? I think it must be done through the "talent tree" as suggested by Fearless. It seems to me that the special potions appear in the list of potions and oils and should be available when you have the correct ingredients. I haven't tried to use either the Frightener or Hellhounds but did a trial of the unknown potion resulting in a black, red and white screen that I could not control. I am having trouble finding the ingredients for the Swallow and Cat potions, I keep getting a message that they need a better alchemical base. What is the best base?

Has anyone gone through the Cemetary to the Crypt and found that the map changed from the Crypt to Temeraria(sp?)? I did not get to the Alchemical laboratory or the Chest with the letter. My sense of direction was hopeless when the map became Temeria. It's shown on page 111 of the Game Guide and is where det. Raymond's body is found.

The alcohol is the base for the potion, and generally speaking, the more expensive it is, the better it is. IIRC, Swallow and Cat only need a medium-price alcohol.

Alchemical base for potions

It must be something else then as I have a number of high alcohol jugs. Thanks for the response.
