Help!? Main char. can't initiate speech

My main character in a single player game can no longer initiate dialog! All five NPCs can start dialog with townspeople, shopkeeps, etc, but not me. I've gone back to a backup save, about 12 hours gametime prior to current gametime, and it has the same problem. My only other save is some 15 days back... not an option!
When I attempt to initiate dialog, the other person will turn to face me, and a message from me will appear in the dialog box... something completely random like telling an underdark merchant about what an hourglass is, or telling a peaceful drow in a tavern "We'd better get out of here quick!". Has anyone had this problem, or have any idea what to do? I haven't added the bonus merchants yet, or downloaded the patch either, if that makes a difference in diagnosis. Thanks in advance!

I'm in Ust Natha, chapter 5 I believe. I've completed a couple of missions, and am supposed to meet Solufein and Phaere (sp?) in the tavern... she won't talk to my main char (alias of Veldrin), and when anyone else initiates dialog, she says "I need only speak to Veldrin" or something similiar.

Now that is strange, is your character the party leader?

I've tried with both my character as the lead, and with Imoen... I've had Imoen running point while in Ust Natha... at least make it appear that the female is in charge while in Matriarchal territory.

Try talking with solofein first, I think I had the same trouble before and that helped.

I honestly don't know. A shot in the dark here... do you think a spell (feeblemind) would cause something like this??

I'll give that a shot Drakron... as far as the feeblemind suggestion, I checked to be sure I hadn't been affected by any spells.
Thanks!

ok, I've tried everything I can think of. My character can't initiate dialog with ANYONE!?
I've made sure that I'm not inviso, or hidden in shadows, or anything like that. I'm not under the effect of any spells, I've even tried removing various protection devices to see if that would somehow help...(I mean, if you saw a naked drow in a bar, wouldn't you make SOME SORT of comment?)
All my other NPCs can initiate dialog with random people, just not with Phaere, whom I need to speak with to continue my quests. Any help?

Now that I think about it I can barely recall something similar happen to me quite a while back...in one of my first games. What does your "small" character portrait look like??? (the one on the right side of the screen)....

Can you leave the screen, and can you rest?? Or can't you, and does it say you can't do so while someone is in a shop, or similar?

In other words, what small symbols are on your small character icon in the bar to the right? Is there some yellowish/orange symbol, not related to a spell or effect?? (Should be in the upper left corner of the image).

ok, to answer your questions.
@Karembou- I am using a custom portrait. It's the close-up of Drizzt, where you can just see the tops of his crossed scimitars. For my large portrait, I'm using that Elmore painting of Raistlin, where he is holding his staff, and spraying a village with lightning... Have you noticed how dark his face is in the pic? Looks drow to me!
@Maurice- Yes, I can leave areas and enter new ones, and I can rest. The only symbols on my small character portrait are protections from various items...(Vocalize, Haste, Magic Resistance, etc.)

Thank you for taking the time to help me out... if possible!

Try a cure disease spell (even though your portrait doesn't show anything wrong). This helped me when my pc went blind and could only cast spells from one foot away from the target. Nothing showed that anything was wrong with me, but there it was. Worth a shot maybe.

I once cheated the scimitar (that belongs to Drizzt) in my inventory and got the same problem. (did you get the scimitar illigally?) That idiot mage kept following me around but didn't attack me and I couldn't talk to anyone. (at first I could when I got to the elven city with the black dragon I got stuck) Nothing helped but throwing the scimitar away. (just dropped it somewhere I think...) It wasn't much fun anyway cause the d*mn thing was too good.

So my question is, do you have an idiot mage following you around? If so, drop the scimitar.

@Chrissy- nope, this is a totally legit charactar. I've done no cheats, and imported no items... I imported this character from BG1/Tales of the Sword Coast, and have had no problems with him until now. (And by the way, I don't actually have either of Drizzt's blades, I'm just using a pic of him as my character's small portrait.)
@Foul- I'll give that a shot when I get home from work tonight.

Thank you for your continued assistance, oh wise denizens of the gamebanshee world...

Well, I tried casting a Heal on my character (which should cure blindness, feeblemind, even though no symbols appear on my small character portrait, with no luck. Sounds like I might have to contact Black Isle or Interplay or something...
