Thieves in BG1

Whats is the story with thieves in BG1?, is it worth getting some cool equipment for them?.. I have Safana in my party and so far her backstab never really connects. She is only level 4 and have x2 times. I know it will be better with time, but will it be good enough?, If I understand it correctly, you have to be behind your target, right? is it mandatory that you use stealth?

You need to be behind your target and either stealthed or invisible.

I am currently playing a thief and going through BG1. I find it quite fun too! You can get some cool equipment at the Weaponsmith in Beregost: Shadow Armor and Dagger of Venom.
Succesfully hiding in shadows by using stealth is required when backstabbing. (Although going invisible will do it too).
I had Safana in my party for awhile too and I remember that she had a lousy stealth rating (when I found her at Level 4), most of her points were spent in find traps.
