The underdog Ranger build

For some reason I feel strongly inclined to playing a ranger character. Even though they seem to be real underdogs.

So here is a first shot at a noob ranger build.

Ranger Dual-Wield Build | NWN2 Character Builder

criticism not only welcome but needed.

Install Storm of Zehir.

Use the race Yuan-ti. ;)

Basically it's dual-wielding high BAB Strength Rogue.. you might be able to use different classes to better fit this structure.

Unfortunatly I can't get Storm of Zehir in Brazil. I bought NWN2 Gold on Gamersgate but they don't sell SoZ and I can't buy it from Atari either.

So I'm going to be gimped on that regard. :(

There are a bunch on Amazon.. don't know what it would do to a different language pack though (..though I'm sure there are language pack patches.). :o

(..if you decide to go that route pay as little as possible, but buy new.)

With regard to the build as is..

Strength ends on 27.. you don't get anything out of an odd-number attribute unless it's for a prerequisite (..and it isn't here).

Favored Enemies:
Undead
Outsiders
Animal/Beasts
Monstrous Humanoids
Elementals
Generally Constructs, but almost anything really.
(..in that order.)

Dragons and Fey are rare. (..though in MOTB Telthor "spirits" aren't, but they aren't difficult to hurt either.)

I'd choose Great Cleave over Power Critical. With your number of attacks and strength damage it will be useful. With your High AB Power Critical won't.

Expose Weakness is good for a high Dexterity build. Pick something else (perhaps another Great Strength to get it to 28?)

Oh, my game is in english no problems there. The real problem would be buying a CD/DVD game after so many years of digital downloads.

I don't remember which was the last game I bought on CD. I know my BG2 is CD only, so that might have been the one.

Back to the build. Roger on the strength being 1 short. Honest noobish mistake.

The world of Power Criticals vs Cleaves + AB + #of attacks is still very misterious.

I read what Power Criticals do as a feat but when you say it isn't worth it in this build it still feels like reading greek to me :p

I fixed the order of favored enemies. What are monstrous humanoids supposed to be anyway?

Criticals:

The "threat" portion is tough to get because it's a non-modified 1d20 roll. If you have a threat range for the weapon that is 19-20 and you roll a 19 then you have achieved the threat (and you move on to the confirm roll). If you roll a 18 then no critical. Other than the weapon and if you have Improved Critical for that weapon or Keen (not both) there is nothing you can do to lower the threat range (..unless you are a 7th level Weapon Master).

By contrast the next calculation, confirm, can be *much* easier to achieve. It's just an attack roll with all modifications. i.e. melee strength attack roll:
1d20 + base attack bonus + strength bonus + size modifier + enhancement bonus + spell buffs..
vs.
opponents AC.

The only thing Power Critical does is add +4 to that "laundry list" of modifications you have on your attack roll.

With a Ranger you have 1d20 + high BAB + good strength bonus + likely an enhancement bonus on your weapon.

Because your BAB keeps enhancing each level, your attack numbers get better and better, more so than just about any opponent's AC. The net result is that you are almost guaranteed not to miss a confirm roll, and therefor the addition of +4 to confirm is useless.

I spec'ed Monstrous Humanoid because of MOTB.

Depending on how you play the game, you might be better off with Elemental before it.

Actually now that I think of it.. there are a LOT of Humans in MOTB, and a fair number even in the OC.

Because of this I'd probably change the order to:

Undead
Human
Outsider
...
