My pet peeve is when someone needs help, but does not tell others what worked when they find a solution. Basically install a NOCD crack for KOTOR. The Nocd crack will get you past the launcher screen, thus the error. I read the advice here:

or just delete the intro movies from the game folder and run kotor in winXP SP2 compatibility mode as administrator
