Companions, dismissal, experience

Hey all, I just started playing this game and after reading a little of the guide on this site discovered that experience gained is divided between all the players in your party and at your camp. Is there a way to sever ties with members so this is no longer the case? How do you dismiss a follower completely not just send them to camp?
Help would be appreciated.

First off, experience is not really divided by all party member, it is given to all your characters equally once they join your group, regardless of whether they are in your party or not. When you are awarded X amount of XP, all your character get that ammount of XP. Going it alone is not going to get you any extra XP or help you level up any faster.
If you really want to get rid of a character, you can do so by speaking to them at camp, with the exception of Allistar, as he is essential to the plot. All the others you can simply ask to leave.

Thanks for the reply. What I read though said xp is "divided equally among all your NPCs regardless of if they are in your party or at camp". What you're saying is that if, say, you get 50 xp from a codex, everybody gets 50 xp. If that's true it's not an issue. So if somebody disengages a trap and gets 30xp, everybody is getting 30 xp?

Exactly. 30 XP for a kill is 30 XP for everyone. 25 for unlocking a chest gets everyone 25. All recent Bioware games have worked this way, such as Jade Empire, the Mass Effects, and I believe Neverwinter Nights.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll leave the unwanted types standing naked in camp since they each have associated side quests that grant experience. And they'll be less annoying knowing they're not slowing anyone's advancement.

Not going to make any spoilers here, but, just so you know, I did the same thing, and it kind of got me into trouble later on in the game. You can give the companions you don't use some crappy equipment, but I'd suggest that you give them something.

Actually, give the companions you have your B equipment, the items you've just outgrown, but are too good to sell immediately. And don't forget to level them up. At some point you made need one or all of them.

Party members just left in camp don't match you point for point though. At best, you can level them up to close to your level, but they will always be lagging behind characters you actually use. Some party members may actually surpass you if you get them early enough and constantly use them (such as when you fall in battle and the rest of the team gets the kills, AFAIK).

I try to keep at least 2 people in my party at all times, simply because they stay closer in xp to you.
The people left behind in your camp will gain level n-1 when you gain level n.
So the moment you level to 16, you can go back to your camp and level everybody to 15.
However, if you keep at least 2 people in your party whenever possible, they may stay much closer to your level.
