Steam New Vegas saves & install ?

I have a few questions and hope someone can help me.

1) My machine has a 36gb HDD for C: and a 1.5tb D: Drive that I install most games on and save files. Steam, which Fallout NV requires seems to demand to be installed in C:\Program Files and installs Fallout New Vegas in a sub folder of Steam. Is there anyway to get this installed on my large HDD ?

2) I read something saying I had 1000 saves. When I overwrite a saved game the count seems to continue. I've had a few dry runs to test character creation and S.P.E.C.I.A.L. point allocation. I now have the character I want (3561988) and am ready to play but I'm on save # 0026 . How can I start fresh ? Are saves kept on Steam or on my HDD ?

1) It appears that steam games have to be installed to the same drive where steam is installed. To change this, look here.

2) The save # doesn't mean anything. If you save to the same slot each time, then you only have 1 save, no matter what the # climbs to. You'd have to be a serious save-aholic to reach 1000 saves.

Oh, kewl !
1.Exit the Steam client application.
2.Browse to the Steam installation folder for the Steam installation you would like to move (C:\Program Files\Steam by default).
3.Delete all of the files and folders except the SteamApps folder and Steam.exe
4.Cut and paste the whole Steam folder to the new location, for example: D:\Games\Steam\
5.Launch Steam and log into your account.
That doesn't seem too hard. Thank you for helping me.
