Whenever I talk to an NPC, there is a high chance his or her opening text will be something along the lines of 'One moment, I'm busy' (not the exact words). You can still choose basic dialogue topics. When you talk to them a second time, the opening text will be set normally, except in that they have met you before 'Oh, hey it's you again, etc'.

It was fun the first 10 times, but it's been getting mighty old having to close and re-open dialogue all the time. Especially the quest npc's have unique dialogue options that only appear in their 'true' opening text (though you will still get that after reopening the dialogue, it is different since it's your 2nd encounter with them).

I went over my modlist, but I couldn't see any mod that could be truly responsible for it. I suspect something hitched a ride with another mod. Has anyone encountered this problem before and found out what mod is doing this?

This is caused by one of the economy overhaul mods, and it is mentioned in the ReadMe. The mod uses scripts to modify NPC barter and speech skills on the fly as you level so that bartering doesn't become too easy. The merchant buy/sell exploit will still work occasionally, but it is not easy or common.

To get this to work the author needs to adjust each NPC any time they load. So you talk to the NPC once and the script activates, but can't complete, so you cancel the conversation, the script updates the NPC in memory, and you access them again for the adjusted stats.

I know I have the mod installed, but I have a lot of mods and I'm not sure which one this was.

There is also a mod which puts in the words "NPC doesn't seem to hear you." if you're carrying Skooma or Moonsugar. You can deal with legal merchants if carrying, but they call the guards if you try to sell. I just cannot recall if that is the same mod as above or a second one.

Yup, I've confirmed that it is the Economy overhaul mod. I'm in a bit of a bind, it does provide a needed service in my mod directory. I think I'll just have to leave it activated.

Thanks. :)
