They're wizards. The Simbul's one of the Seven Sisters, I think. Larloch has a few spells named after him. I have no idea about their comparative power, though.

@zorac: There's a difference between a child of Mystra and a Chosen of Mystra. Elminster is a Chosen of Mystra, but doesn't have immortal blood flowing through his veins. The Simbul, on the other hand, is actually one of her mortal offspring. Another one that comes to mind is Lady Alustriel of Silvermoon(sp?).

@Magus, yes I am well aware that The Simbul is an offspring of Mystra. But she is still a "Chosen of Mystra"(tm), just like Elminster.

Or is this covered in an errata somewhere?

i can post the back story from the seven sisters source book, if i know that i wont be flamed for copyright infringement. basicly, from the elminster: the making of a mage novel, elminster, as a lad, had an avater of Mystra as a romantic companion. when she revealed herself to him, she offered to make him one of her chossen. magic is now very much a part of his being. he doesnt need sleep, food, adn other mundane troubles.

this was done because, some say, mystra, having her power rooted in the magic of the land, forsaw the time of troubles and wanted to give some of her power over to some mortals, to ease that troubled period. anyway, most mortals were found to not be able to wishstand the divine power, adn died, or became twisted and corrupt, like the mage who founded the cult of the dragon.

so instead of trying to force power upon mature hosts, mystra set about breeding suitable vessels. but doing so, she also hoped to avaoid the fueds and ties most adults would bring with them. thats where the seven sisters come in. they are the mortal offspring of mystra, so co-habbited the body of a young half elven mage, adn together with a noble young harper, they produced six fine young girls. however, the harper, Dornal, wanted a son, and was distressed by the state his wife had become. the co-habbitation of mystra had left her body a wreck, almost like a lich, teld together only through mystras will. he had a preist try to help her, but the preist informed him that another power had corrupted her (mystra, but he did not know this) in a rage, he beheaded his once lovly wife. this cause mystra to reveil herself. dornal felt used, adn left mystra, cursing he. but mystra was left with a problem, what to do with the seven, unborn infant? the body of a goddess in unsuitable for child birth, adn her powers would fry the child in its womb.

long story short, some outcast drow were nearby, havin eft the underdark for not bowing to lloth. one of them had a still born child in her womb. to prevent the poisioning of the drow mother, with her grace, mystra switched babies in the womb. the seven sister was born a drow.

there is a whole lots more information about the sisters in tyhe source book, but thats the basic background. the sisters are

1.Syluné,
2.Alustriel,
3.Dove Falconhand
4.Laeral Silverhand
5.the simbul
6.Storm Silverhand
7.Qilué Veladorn

Syluné has pasted away, defending her home of shadowdale from an attack by and anciet red dragon. she was killed when she broke her staff of the magi over her knee, relashing all its powers at once.

Alustriel is the lady of silverymoon, and has brought that city to a level almost rivaling myth drangor in its wealth of tolerance and knowledge

Dove Falconhand is one of the members of the knights of myth dranor

Laeral Silverhand is the consort of Khelben blackstaff, a (possible) secret lord of waterdeep.

the simbul is also known as the witch queen of Aglarond. she is rumored to be a secret lover of elminster (now theres an image for you!)

Storm Silverhand is a leading member of the harpers, adn possibly the best known of the seven sisters. she lives in semi retirment in shadowdale

not much is known about the seventh sister, Qilué Veladorn, altho it is known that she worships both mystra, and Eilistraee, one of the few gods of good drow. she is, infact, a high preistest of Eilistraee.

okay, hope that answers most peoples questions. anything else people would like to know about the forgotten realms, i'll do my best to answer. ;)

He's just a human that became a really powerful wizard. He had a romance with Mystra, after which he became one of her Chosen (kenny 1) :D Good old parenthetical references... ;)

To put things in to some sort of perspective. Elminster taught most of the seven sisters. The main difference powerwise in the novels between the Simbul and El is that the Simbul is a bit more revengeful.

I don't know a whole lot about Larloch. Where did he come from? I don't know the forgotten Realms source book by heart yet....

this could be my fault. mystra only gave the unborn child to the drow. but gave isnt quite the right word. the child was placed in her womb, with her permission.

various mages around the realms helped to train the seven sisters. elminister did, as did blackstaff. some of the less magically inclined ones went adventuring before returning to take up the mantle of one of mystra chosen.

the seven sisters were NOT born as chosen. they had to accept the responibility when they were ready.

Elminster is also a chosen one, as is blackstaff.

as for larloch, i dont know much about him. yet. i'll keep my eyes peeled for any info i can. where did you find out a bit about him?

The description of Larloch is two pages long! So I won't bore with all the details.

This little excerpt might give you some clues about him however.

"Larloch is said to be the last surviving Netherese arcanist-king who ruled over his flying city for years and abandoned it before Karsus's folly. Now a lich and one of the oldest non-draconic beings in Faerun, Larloch has amassed and arsenal of spells, magic items, and servants. The Shadow King, as he is known in the Sword Coast, now rules the Warlock's Crypt and its inhabitants - liches (many from Netheril), vampires, wights, and lesser undeads."

If you wan't to know more about him and other dark forces of the Faerun buy the "Lords of Darkness" (3e supplement to FRCS)
