Is there any way to keep fenthick alive, or he dies no matter what you do?

There's no solution. His death is determined by story and has huge impact on later events... which you will soon experience.

Unfortunately, that's true. It's quite a strong story point, a very tragic one and well done. I remember it really got to me.

Although it makes you wonder how someone who's an elf, and so lived for a very long time and presumably has seen enough to amass considerable experience, plus is a cleric and so should be a) wise b) empathic c) able to understand people, could have been so easily duped.
