I read around the web and I see the people's response to skyrim. They all talk about game features and it disturbs me. Not a lot of people discuss the story (or main quest). Everyone seems to be focused on Bethesda fixing the problems with oblivion in this game rather then focusing the story. I personally find the story interesting and cool, but when I look past my fanboy exitement I find myself worrying about the story. Here is the description of the game's story via wikipedia:
"Skyrim is not a direct sequel to Oblivion; rather, it is a new chapter in the Elder Scrolls series, set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion. In the premise to Skyrim, the Empire began ceding territory to the Elven nations it once ruled, because there was no heir to the Emperor's throne. The Blades had no one to defend, and gradually died, were murdered, or secluded themselves from the rest of the world. After the king of Skyrim was assassinated, a civil war broke out amongst the native Nord race – the majority being those who wished for Skyrim to secede from the Empire, and the rest being those who wished for Skyrim to stay in the Empire.
As with previous Elder Scrolls games, Skyrim begins with the player character as an unknown prisoner. The player character eventually learns that Skyrim's civil war is last in a sequence of prophetic events foretold by the Elder Scrolls, who also foretell of the return of Alduin, the Nordic god of destruction. Taking the form of a gigantic dragon, Alduin is prophesied to consume the world with his servants, the Jills (a race of black dragons). The player character is the last Dovahkiin (Dragonborn), a dragon hunter anointed by the gods to help fend off the threat Alduin poses to Skyrim and Tamriel. Aiding the player is Esbern (voiced by Max von Sydow), one of the last Blades."
At first glance it looks like a good game, but it has the possiblity to become a oblivion like story. "Ooh, a dragon let's kill it! (A million dragons later) There's Alduin! Let's use them dragon shouts!" Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely pumped about this game; I just don't want the gameplay to be awesome and the story be crap.
The story...

The main quest chain is not so important for me(I will do it after I completed every side quest and cleared every dungeon on the map).I played the last 2 TES games mainly for the living breathing world and I always had a feeling that the main story is there just to give a big goal to those who need 1(I dont need 1,being a citizen of Cyrodil/Morrowind/Skyrim is good enough for me,especially when I can become a master thief or a famous fighter).
Tbh with you I am tired of being forced into a role(f.ex. Hawke,Geralt /sigh) or into a story where my ultimate goal is saving the world(I am not saying that these games are necessarily bad but I need something else and not just that).I want to create my OWN character and I want to do what I want and live how I want in that imaginary world.I just hope that Bethesda wont sacrifice the big open world for a stronger story(we already have enough of those games).

Couldn't agree more with you. The open-ended world concept was what got me hooked on the TES series in the first place. So much so that I did not even touch the main storyline a couple of hundred hours into Oblivion. I just could not bear the thought of marauding deadra and other nasties spilling out into Cyrodiil and slaughtering wandering NPCs. If anyone was going to kill them, it damn well better be me.childofbhaal wrote:I played the last 2 TES games mainly for the living breathing world and I always had a feeling that the main story is there just to give a big goal to those who need 1(I dont need 1,being a citizen of Cyrodil/Morrowind/Skyrim is good enough for me,especially when I can become a master thief or a famous fighter).
Love is just a chemical. We give it meaning by choice ~ Eleanor Lamb, Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams
If there's going to be an open world rpg, I want the main quest to be a good story and very deverse. I want to be able to do the main storyline over and over again having different results each time. But I also want to sometimes just have my character have a peacefull existence with a simple job away from fightin hordes of beasts. Overall I want a pleasant mix of a good story and a massive open world.childofbhaal wrote:The main quest chain is not so important for me(I will do it after I completed every side quest and cleared every dungeon on the map).I played the last 2 TES games mainly for the living breathing world and I always had a feeling that the main story is there just to give a big goal to those who need 1(I dont need 1,being a citizen of Cyrodil/Morrowind/Skyrim is good enough for me,especially when I can become a master thief or a famous fighter).
