Odd problem...

New here, kinda hate my first post being this kind but oh well.

I just got BG last night and installed it this morning but I'm having some odd problems making a character. Seems no matter what I do when I go to name it the name box automatically fills up with the number eight, like ten eights in a row. I got tired of trying to find out why and just left my first character named that but when I get into the game to the point that I can move around and whatnot I only saw a black screen then I realized that the, well not sure what it's called, but the box you move around to see various parts of the map immediately moves to the top-right most spot. I try moving it in the map screen but it just snaps right back into place.

I have NO idea what could be causing this whatsoever. I'm playing on my Acer laptop, which is only 2-3 years old, on Vista with the program running in compatibility mode for XP-SP 2. I will admit I pirated the game, I simply couldn't find it anywhere and without a bank account buying online isn't an option, but I doubt the pirated version is the problem as everyone else that DLed it on the site only posted good things about the torrent.

I've tried googling all day now but nowhere does anyone have the name/map problem. Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated, as an RPG fan missing out on this game would truly suck.

Oddly, I encountered that problem some years ago when playing on an Acer Laptop and later on my Dell Laptop with Vista (only occurred when using the console, and sometimes the map would tend to the bottom left of the screen) - similar to there being a stuck key or something. Vista is not the best OS for running the BG saga.

Best I can suggest is to enusre the game is fully patched and try Sorcerors Place, Pocket Plane and Gibberling 3 for additional fixes.

The other issue could be that it is a duff copy. Best advice, find someone that likes you and get them to gift you a copy on GOG.com, most of their games have been tested for vista compatibility.

I never had any problems with BG2 on any of my Acer laptops, it must be either a driver error, an installation one, or you just downloaded a borked game.

Not that i endorse piracy.

I noticed you didn't say anything about the install path - for Vista and Win 7, install in a path outside of program files or program files(x86). Something like c:\games\bg2\

Also, for install order, you'll want

SOA
TOB
ToB patch
G3 Fixpack

that will get you the most stable release. you'll want to make sure 3D acceleration is turned off and you'll probably want to install the Widescreen mod.

make sure UAC is turned off when you install.

also, note that if you got the game from gog.com, it's already patched, so don't apply the patch again.
