Hello all - I am trying to go through again, and I get an annoying error that I cannot load a saved game in ToB. The error message I get is:
An assertion error failed in InfScreenLoad.exp @ line #1428.
Please assist. I have comepetely uninstalled and reinstalled, and run the patch, all to no avail.
Thanks all

I don't know, but you might want to list your PC setup (mainly your OS, i.e. XP, Vista, Windows 7, Linux) and what version of the game you have (old-school 5 CDs, Complete Collection, downloaded version), as well as if you've imported your game to/from a different computer.
In the meantime, why not give it a shot with the Gibberlings 3 Fixpack?
Good luck.

Thanks 'Grasshopper:

I am running Windows 7, "old school" 5+1 CD set (didn't know there is a "single disk" version.) I have started and finished the game on the same laptop several times, and I haven't (to my knowledge) installed anything that would be wierd or anything.
I CAN load on SOA, but it is only ToB that doesn't allow me to load a game - kinda hard when you consider the difficulty of the game. Have not installed any mods - and not sure how to. Let's just get it running properly first, then we can deal with suggestions on what mod(s) to run.
Any thoughts?
Thanks again for the response Ode to a Grasshopper.

Hmm... Not a *common*(the common one is InfScreenLoad.cpp at line 1492.) assertion error - but it seems you've corrupted BMP or MOS files. Try browsing them with Near Infinity, and tell what file doesn't not load (Upon the loading NI will tell you that this file seems to be corrupted)
Do you have any mods installed?

Many thanks for something alse to try @Aliyappo.

I'll give that a try.
Stay tuned!

UPDATE: So I am at
Near Infinity - Download
I tell my system to "load". Now I get a box asking what file I'd like to check. There is nothing highlighted. Don't know where to go from here.

Whut? NI needs Java for it to launch, forgot about that.
In order to browse the game files, you need to in 'open' window find your chitin.key file. Chitin keeps track of most files, if I understood you correctly.

I'm sorry for being so dense, but you are going to have to explain it a little better.
I can get to the window where I can "select" a file, but nothing is populated in the opened folder - anywhere. I have the latest java running, so I don't think that's a problem.
So, search for chitin.key file. Any hints where it might live? Is it in the Black Isle file folder (under program files)? I'll try again. If a file IS corrupted, then what do I do?
Thanks again

Chitin.key 'lives' in your BG2 folder (one of the five core components of BG2 install, with BGMain.exe, override, dialog.tlk and baldur.ini) and NI tries to find so-called infinity keyfile (chitin)
Otherwise, you can uninstall ToB, click cancel when the wizards proceeds deleting BG2:SoA and try reinstalling ToB again, when use 'Import Game' - you'll have to begin ToB from all over again, unfortunately.
You can also try various GUI mods, that change loading MOS files... W_GUI is my favorite...

So, I did what you said. I found the chitin.key file.
Opened NI and selected the chitin file. Now I have a giant file tree. Not sure what I am trying to do. Which file folder do I need to open? How do I check if a vital file is corrupted or not (obviously corrupted, or it would work).

Hmmm
I took 'Grasshopper's suggestion:
why not give it a shot with the Gibberlings 3 Fixpack?
Good luck.
Installed the version suggested, I got a DOS window that said "Unable to find "Dialog.tlk".
This sounds ominous. (queue scary music.)
I have done a complete uninstall/reinstall of both ToB and SoA, and I get the same error that started the whole thread: Assertion error...
I don't know what else to do and don't have any programming knowledge to fix this (other than aforesaid uninstall/reinstall).

Try reinstalling outside of Program Files.

If it can not find dialogue.tlk - no.
